Evolution. The moment the first man first tied his first rock to his first stick (that's a lot of firsts!), their evolutionary path took a turn towards dependency on tools, and look where it got us today. Whoever made that rock-on-a-stick doohickey really fucked us over in the long run, didn't he?

Boy am I glad carbon levels are what they are today.

Wouldn't we be a bit bigger as well though? Plus we could load those fuckers with bullets and make them extinct.

At least we can fly into space and go to the bottom of the sea. No other species can do that.
