Any news on the Sperm whales? Are they alright?
Last I checked the NOAA observed that the sperm whale population in the gulf had a PBR(potential biological removal) of 3. Which means, if 3 whales die from human activity (not including natural causes), then the population decline is irreversible, and they will eventually go extinct in the area. This could be from the oil, or maybe a ship strike, or even rouge Japanese or Norwegians poaching some whale. On average a female sperm whale has about 3 babies in its entire life, and take a very long time to sexually mature, so the young may not even survive long enough to have a baby. So far they have only found one dead sperm whale 77 miles south of the Deepwater Horizon site. It's unclear if the whale died from oil, NOAA scientists are conducting tests to find out the cause of death. So it stands at PBR 3-2.
It would take approximately 50,000 volunteers to help clear up this mess in a year.
A year? They are still clearing the Exxon Valdez spill from 1989 which only split 32 million gallons, they still experience problems among the wildlife there. The Deepwater Horizon/BP spill is around 170 million gallons so dont expect for the BP one to get any better in our life time.

At least the oil leak was stopped, now cleaning it will be hard :(
