But does it look better than Crysis ? (2)
I know there's no way in hell they'll do it, but I'd LOVE the remake of the first Unreal on this engine. Not suggesting, just finding that would be cool.
what do you mean by sandbox
UE3 can't do Gamebryo style world streaming, I wish it could though, I mean it can stream levels, but you have to hide the transition to another level or else you see a black void.
But does it look better than Crysis ? (2)
crysis is more realistic while unreal is more fantasy they both are equally good imo, just in different ways
crysis is more realistic while unreal is more fantasy they both are equally good imo, just in different ways
Unreal runs a million times better whilst maintaining that good look though.
crysis is more realistic while unreal is more fantasy they both are equally good imo, just in different ways
that's totally dependent on the developer but if i was one i'd always pick UE3 over crytek
crysis is more realistic while unreal is more fantasy they both are equally good imo, just in different ways
The engine has nothing to do with the art used, fantasy or realistic. Blacklight: Tango Down was a UE3 games, as well as Gears of War, Mass Effect, Turok, Rainbow Six Vegas 1 and 2.. I'd hardly call those cartoony or fantasy. Oh, and I suppose this is "realistic"? It's Cryengine 2, after all. [img_thumb]http://www.giery.eu/files/u2339/merchants_of_brooklyn-2.jpg[/img_thumb]
It would be pretty sweet if they updated Unreal Tournament 3 with this tech, but I'm not holding my breath.
That was so fucking awesome, words cannot even begin to describe how realistic that looked.
Crysis still looks better and it came out 3 years ago.
Wow, even the flowers are gritty. Are the developers allergic to colour or something? I don't think I've ever seen anything on that engine that doesn't look supergritty and colourless.
Most places in the world aren't colored like a rainbow. [editline]27th November 2010[/editline]
wait what? uh yes it can very easily
What? That's like 9 minutes of wood chopping.

But yes of course it depends on how you use it. It's just that I don't think unreal had the same goal the cryengine had when it comes to usage since Crytek kept talking about being photorealistic and rendering as close to realistic scenes as possible. While the unreal engine didn't really have any specific goal like that AFIAK other then to be an overall great engine. Cryengine 2 seems to look best in forests and jungles, but I think it looks good other places too. I've seen fantasy landscapes in Cryengine2 and it doesn't look as good as they do in Unreal from what I've seen so far. There are more people modding unreal anyway so I can't really judge it there. The plants I've seen in unreal seem very plastic ish though like in this video. I think it's because the leafs don't allow light to pass through them. To me this makes it look like fantasy when showing of scenes with plants like this video. The most realistic looking game out of the ones you mentioned, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, have plants in it too, but they look the same as they do in this video. Personally I think Unreal looks a unrealistic with the way it renders scenes if you look away from the art itself and just all the shaders and whatnot. It seems more surreal, but this isn't a bad thing anyway. Iike it when games look like that. Then again I also think Cryengine2 seems a bit surreal, just not as much as Unreal. I really liked the showcase here. It looks beautiful. [editline]27th November 2010[/editline] And I'm pretty sure most of the games you mentioned have bought the engine and customized it for their own needs. Such as the merchant game which would be more like a variant of the cryengine. This is not something I know 100% for sure, but most developers who plan to make a game they want to sell buy the full license for an engine and modify it for their needs. I meant more like using the UDK and the Crysis SDK. You can pretty much mod any of the engines if you have the full source code to look like a completely different engine.
Whenever I play a game on UE3 engine, I feel absolutely detached from the environment. It looks nice and all but it looks like an overglossed CGI movie, I get the nerve racking feeling that it's trying to look realistic but fails. Maybe it's the brown. [editline]27th November 2010[/editline] Depth is what I'm looking for, and it seems depth is blurriness.
wait what? uh yes it can very easily
Why does everyone always add porn music to videos?
I think Bioshock and Mass Effect would like to have a word.
Bio shock felt yuck (played it on Xbox 360 and it felt so linear in terms of local movement) And Mass Effect .... uhhh Never played it, Anyone wanna buy it for me ? (no ...)
I like crisp graphics. This does not appeal to me.
Gah, posted before writing anything. Anyway, I'll record a video on one of the maps that comes with it when I've got the thing set up.
Make a thread on it when you do it.
Though It does look nice, I feel like it's changing too much stuff through the color correction, bloom, and blur. [editline]27th November 2010[/editline] Mirrors Edge actually looked quite crisp though, but the first-party stuff like Unreal and GoW aren't.
Such a beautiful engine.
