I am one desensitized mother-fucker, and yet this makes me sick.
Stuff like this makes me want to move to a more friendly part of Texas...rural areas like mentioned a few posts up aren't very kind to gays...
So yeah...I don't feel too terribly safe, and is why I try everything I can to be 'normal'. I'll probably end up moving near or in Austin after I get things taken care of here.
As much as people kick people around for using a 'false stereotype', as a Texan in the less urban areas...it is a true stereotype.

Holy fuck I didn't even read the article fully. This happened in Corpus, and I live here. Yeah, wow, didn't even see this in the news. We don't have issues with gay tolerance at all. Most of the people I know don't hate gays at all, though some will show outward disliking of them, they're only real issue is "they better not make out in front of me." Of course, I live in the Calallen area, which is more of a suburb of Corpus, and we don't have many religious zealots down here.

Yeah, I don't like it either, but it's not like we have people preaching how gays are wrong or are abominations. Most people are fine with gays, at least as far as I've seen. Living 3 - 4 hours from Corpus, I do know how Corpus is just a lazy city where hardly anyone does anything. And it's crime is actually not so high, so this comes to a shock for me that 2 teens were killed there.

Um, having lived in Texas my whole life, there is no such thing as a "standard Texan response to homosexuals." Go to Austin, Corpus Christi, Dallas, San Antonio, El Paso, or Fort Worth and you'll see very few people openly against homosexuals. As said before, it's not a "Texas" thing, it's a "bigot" thing, and there are bigots all over the country. It's just a stereotype that all Texans are like this because some north Texas towns have very vocal Christian majorities, but this is true for every state.

We can't air on the side that it was a blatant act of homophobia. Maybe it was a mugger with a gun and they refused to relinquish their belongings so the assailant shot them dead. The fact that they were a lesbian couple is pointed out because it makes it much more sensational and gets people riled up about it and up in arms against homophobia. No leads, no motive discovered yet, so no reason to assume...
