Bible belt... aka religious zealotry
Because religious only exist in the Bible Belt and nowhere else in the world, and it's not like hate crimes have ever happened in states that aren't in the Bible Belt. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Doodler http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abiding_Truth_Ministries#Abiding_Truth_Ministries http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Vision Not like these people are outside of this Bible Belt area, nope, no sir. Also like to note that the location this murder took place wasn't even a part of Texas that is in the Bible Belt. Corpus Christi is not even close to any red. No, more stereotyping. Some kid on the internet who assumes that all Texans are bigots just because two lesbians die and the stigma that surrounds the state because of a very vocal minority. I have never met anyone that was racist, homophobic, or sexist in the way that people portray.
Bible belt... aka religious zealotry
not exactly. As someone who lived in Texas for about a decade it's not nearly that extreme. It's certainly not the hive of scum and villainy some people here would make it out to be. A lot of posters seem to be assuming that because this happened in Texas, it obviously has to be about religion and intolerance. Also weird is that this gets a huge amount of criticism and know-it-alls saying things like "oh texas look at those dumb hicks", but equally fucked up shit like a news article about a man on drugs beating an old lady with a shovel gets a response equivalent to "meh".
If you believe Texas isn't as homophobic as a lot of us say it is; I dare you to wear a pink shirt with short shorts and travel from the north to the south ends of Texas without getting shot.
Living in Texas, so far everyone I've seen is really tolerant about being gay n' stuff. I don't know where people get the stereotype that we're all megachristian zealots that are homophobes.
I live somewhere between McAllen and Brownsville. They aren't "HAAAAATEful" hateful of gays, it's just that some aren't just that accepting of them.
It is always a shame when something like this fits a stereotype. It just reinforces the beliefs of ignorant arseholes.
This is gonna sound horrible, but... Tall grass. That's why you shouldn't walk in there.
Texas is super liberal in many parts now, so I doubt it was because they were lesbians. I think some fucker saw them in tall grass, took advantage, and tried blowing their brains out. But, sadly, there's always the chance of a raging homophobe, and it's also likely
Um, having lived in Texas my whole life, there is no such thing as a "standard Texan response to homosexuals." Go to Austin, Corpus Christi, Dallas, San Antonio, El Paso, or Fort Worth and you'll see very few people openly against homosexuals. As said before, it's not a "Texas" thing, it's a "bigot" thing, and there are bigots all over the country. It's just a stereotype that all Texans are like this because some north Texas towns have very vocal Christian majorities, but this is true for every state.
Why does everyone skip Houston ? Montrose is a massive homosexual community in Downtown. We've had a gay mayor. Our lights on the City Hall were colored rainbow for Pride 2012. We have a wonderful city full of wonderful people. I love seeing ignorance be blown out of the water. So much ignorance in this thread. I have never experienced visible, audible, or any other sort of homosexual hatred anywhere in this state I have been. Every major city has large homosexual communities and even smaller cities I've been to tend to have plenty of people with "indifferent" lifestyles that would be disliked by extremists. Just because one idiot does this, the whole state is racist, sexist, etc. Please grow up.
Stereotyping.
Have you >been< to Texas?
well, what can I say? Everything is bigger in Texas.
Stereotyping.
Profiling.
Texas is too big to generalize under one stereotype. We literally have an abundance of every type of person. It's just the movie/media portrayals focus on the ignorant ones. I mean, we're almost as big as Europe. And have like 5 different types of climates and geographies. We have farmers and ranchers, surfers and snowboarders, physicists and rednecks, country boys and city-slickers, oil power and wind power, atheists and bible thumpers, and much, much more. Dare I say we have everything. What I'm trying to say is, you can't fit our whole population in one bigoted generalization. Have a read at this: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EverythingIsBigInTexas Come visit some time, you're almost guaranteed to fit in somewhere.
A lot of stereotypical people stereotyping others. A vicious circle.
Fat northern state nerds using news against a state they've more than likely never been to.
There are tons of incredibly liberal parts of Texas. Dallas, Corpus, San Antonio, Austin especially.
Corpus/Brownsville is not one of those places, and never has been, tourists or no. What people say/do in private and public are different things.
It says it right there, one died and the other is in "serious but stable condition". Of course, since she was shot in the head, I don't have high hopes.
Waking up and finding out her girlfriend is dead will suck big fucking time.
