I'm sorry what? Basically you've just re-stated that doing unpopular things made her unpopular. What a surprise that must be!
It would be vandalized beyond recognition within seconds of being unveiled.
It'd be vandalized before the veil is even lifted.
The Royals are a tourist attraction; it's no more laughable to going to see Big Ben or the Houses of Parliament or Stonehenge.
So how often do royals actually meet or wave to said tourists every day, exactly?

Don't think it's needed, People will just go and stand outside Buckingham Palace in any case
I'v done it, If only to tick off a to do list when in London.

Then they're going to go see the buildings and sights, not the royals.

I'm sorry, but exactly is your point in this thread?
Regardless on what people think about the royals, it's rather stupid denying the pull they generates from tourism.

My point was a statue of Thatcher bringing tourism is just as laughable as the royals bringing in tourism.

Then its an objectively stupid point. Congratulations.

I do get a kick out of Brits defending their monarchs here, though.

Who's ~defending the monarch~?
My point was a statue of Thatcher bringing tourism is just as laughable as the royals bringing in tourism.
Not really, thatcher is pretty much reviled amongst most people and I doubt most americans even know who she is, while the royals are pretty well loved and are probably one of the first things on people's mind when they think about the UK. The royals are an institution anyway, people don't come to england to see them specifically but they will for all the royal landmarks like buckingham palace etc. This is just a statue and won't bring tourism, it'll just be something for people to say 'oh, while we're in grantham we can look at the thatcher statue'. The only thing it'll really benefit will be the inevitable doughnut/fast food trailer parked next to it.
All that being said, I think that there should be a statue considering it's her birthplace, she's going to die soon and like it or not she was a massive part of the history of this country and affected it in so many ways. For comparison, no-one's going to be erecting an effigy of John Major any time soon.

Don't worry, we get the same kick watching Americans go on about the constitution like it's a holy document written by Jesus.
Labour want this statue, the conservatives don't?
This is very confusing.
New Labour is Thatcherism under the the guise of caring for the working class.
Supposedly people go to the UK just to see the royal family from what I hear from pro-monarchy Brits so why not a statue too?

no matter how many times I have debunked that argument here they still spout that?
how long will it be until somebody posts that awful cgpgrey video
I do get a kick out of Brits defending their monarchs here, though.
No one's defending them here, any normal brit has developed a healthy british apathy towards them by the time they reach adulthood. We sneer at their gaffes, we humour all the relentless ribbon cutting, though the jubilee did instill some sense of national pride in all of us. No harm in keeping them around, they're part of our thousand-year national heritage.

Worst thing is that the royals don't dictate any of our policy but the constitution is a one stop argument winner for retard politicians.

The united states constitution is a more effective monarch than the queen of england

At least we get to replace ours whenever they go out of date.
I do get a kick out of Brits defending their monarchs here, though.
Yes Scorpious, we know you don't like the Monarchy, can you kindly wave your dick somewhere else, or better not at all? its the same tired shit you keep coming out with and despite being repeatedly told again and again in every one of these threads you still claim noone visits the country to see the Royals and various other crap because of your own arrogance.
And I can only find it laughable anyone ever went to America in pursuit of the myth that was the American dream, funnily enough.
The Royals are a tourist attraction; it's no more laughable to going to see Big Ben or the Houses of Parliament or Stonehenge.
I went to see stonehenge, it wasent really all that great, just a bunch of rocks in ground.
That giant white chalk carving on a hill of a man with a massive cock was much better.

the royals are a shadow of their former glory

They get to live big off of taxpayer money and get to be rich no matter how many tuck ups they do. They don't have have any of the problems real people with real lives do, BUT THEY BRING IN TOORUISH MONEE!1
When I see a royal die in a war like any other soldier, and buried just like any other, then I'll accept them

Oh fuck me
You'll only respect the Royals if they die in war. Do you live in the bronze age?
They live well because their ancestors fought or inherited the right from people who fought to be Monarch and with that they were born into a life of wealth that is sustained to keep them in power as they are the core of English history. As I've said before you wouldn't be hopping and skipping your way to the coal factory or the local barracks if you were born in such a life.
And Prince William has served in Apache Gunships. He's willing to put his life on the line for British troops.
They don't have have any of the problems real people with real lives do
What, does that make you jealous? Why do you even give a shit?
Do you not even think she gets a bit pissed off and has problems when Prince Harry is caught fucking someone in a Vegas hotel, and it becomes world news? of course she has problems, and of course they're not problems most of the public is faced with.
They don't effect your life in any way shape or form short of being a distraction in the media and affecting the amount of pennies you pay in tax each year, and the result of that is positive.
The way in which you mention taxpayers and their money closely resembles that of the Sun and the Daily Mail, might I add.
And Scorpious stop being such a coward hiding behind ratings.

okay pal let's rewind a second and look right at this
When I see a royal die in a war like any other soldier, and buried just like any other, then I'll accept them
alright so we've got this idea of the fucking royals joining the army and trying to get fragged in a war just so some dude on the internet will think them worthy of being royalty. i'm not sure if you're Alexander the Great's eunuch or if you just leapt out from Starship Troopers, but that's some straight-up social Darwinist bullshit right there and it's really freaking stupid, because if you just happen to be born to royalty, you're now obligated to go join the army, kill some dudes, and die alone and afraid in some godforsaken hellhole far away from your friends and family, all so that you're worthy of anything more than contempt.
now, i want you to look at this image you've painted for us, and tell me: does it look any better than some bored royals sitting on a throne living nice lives free of worry or troubles? why give them this kind of shit for something they have no control over? fuck, Harry and William joined the army like you say they should, but apparently because neither one got blown the fuck up or shot to shit and buried in a ditch somewhere they still aren't worth it.

I've said my piece.
Also, you guys act as if the UK would really let a royal come into harm's way in their military.
The royals are a tourist attraction.
Fuck, I live in Ottawa and when Will & Kate visited people flipped their shit. It was a huge boon for the city, tourism skyrocketed. It's very easy to believe that many would travel to England to see the various symbols of royal power primarily due to their connection to the royal family.

And? How many political leaders today have their children serving in frontline combat?
Jesus Christ, how did this thread turn from Margaret Thatcher into 'NOBODY LIKES THE MONARCHY WHY DON'T WE JUST PUSH THEM OFF A CLIFF'. It's not like they have any negative effect on society, can't we just leave them be? I personally like the royal family; what I don't like is the media that endlessly takes photos of them performing the most menial tasks, specifically Kate Middleton. It's just Princess Diana all over again.

I call myself something of a monarchist and the only royals I really care about are Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles and to a lesser extent, William (because he's the de facto heir). I have no interest in what colour hat Princess Margaret wore to the Chelsea Flower Show or where the Duchess of Cambridge got her tits out this week, I just want to know that I have ceremonial figureheads who are my little link with history and one of my very few sources of a bit of national pride in these depressing times.
My point was a statue of Thatcher bringing tourism is just as laughable as the royals bringing in tourism.
The royal family are known worldwide, and have never done anything to piss anyon off other than simply exist.
Thatcher is one of the most reviled PMs Britain has EVER HAD and is far from well known. This is eqivilent to France erecting a statue to Sarkozy (maybe not, was he a bad President?), why would anyone travel to see that specifically?
We get it, you don't know why people would flock to see the royals and their buildings, but people do; even if only because they went to London for some other reason and thought "I've got an hour free, let's go see the changing of the guard".
They can just close a hospital to commemorate thatcher instead
