There should be three columns of a birth certificate.
Name:
Gender:
Sex:
no, because there's no way to assign a gender at birth lol

and that information is hardly relevant regardless. (edit: actually I'll take this part back - there are some capacities in which this information may be useful, ie a transgendered person who has not / does not want to transition but would like this information on the certificate so as to not cause confusion as to why their sex may be different than their appearance, but still)

Oh fair enough. Didn't think about that until you made that post.
Adoption is a perfect example. Also, it's not like they expunged your original birth certificate - they keep your original birth certificate with your original last name on record permanently in case it is needed.
If you changed genders, they'd have a record of your old birth certificate with the other gender on it. It's the same thing as legally changing your name and requesting a change on the birth certificate - you have to go to court and have a hearing in some states, but it's almost always permissible if you've already gotten a legal name change.
"They" keep the original but I am not allowed to request it. I can only get the updated version with my stepfather's info.
But yeah I agree, there should be no issue with doing that for gender as well, keeping the original on record if they have to. It's not a logistics issue, it's a transphobic issue.
An even better solution: remove "gender" from birth certificates in the US.
Just list their biological sex. Done. Gender isn't something you can deduce from a crying placenta-coated baby. It shouldn't be necessary to write it on a medical document. For a death certificate or an obituary, yeah, use their gender, but at birth gender is a non-issue and shouldn't be medically assigned in the first place.

birth certificates don't list gender, they list sex.

i can get why you might be confused given the language in the article, news agencies tend to muddle up the terms pretty substantially

surprisingly I do sort of agree with the notion that the birth certificate shouldn't be changed until a transition surgery is performed; however I also believe that transition surgeries should no longer be considered cosmetic, they're pretty medically necessary for most trans people. the main problem is that they are cost prohibitive for a vast amount of trans people right now, who statistically make less money than the average american. those surgeries should be completely covered by health insurance - private or public
My mom married my stepfather when I was 6. He legally adopted me when I was 7 and had my last name changed to his. My ORIGINAL BIRTH CERTIFICATE was updated to show my stepfather as if he were my biological father, and my actual biological father's information was completely removed.
People saying that birth certificates are not living records are wrong.
edit:
also this.
What if your father has a disease, how can they track that? It's irresponsible. It's why I said Appended instead of Updated. Information should be added to a birth certificate, not removed.

They keep the original one permanently in their records. Tada.

Except as I stated earlier I cannot request the original, and my mom doesn't have any copies. So qq I'm fukt there.
It /should/ just be appended.
Uh. The Male/Female on the birth certificate represents the sex, not the gender. Chris is in the right on this one. It's not supposed to be a living document. It is literally there to document how the child at its time of birth.
This seems reasonable enough
The shear level of disconnect between the candidates and the people is ridiculous
