So wait if a police officer asks for your phone for "evidence" purposes, you can't decline?

I would hope that you can refuse, but they'll probably just arrest/detain you for refusing, which they can do. (They may not even need a reason for the detention)

In most third world dictatorships this is a fact, apparently in many US states this is a fact too...
So wait if a police officer asks for your phone for "evidence" purposes, you can't decline?
Apparently it's either the easy or the hard way, with the hard way being them getting a warrant to take it from you.

You can, but then they get a warrant, and you end up in court for obstruction.

Meh these days you can upload videos from your phone to the internet in a matter of minutes. Should be able to argue long enough for that then give it to them.

Cool you can upload your brutality video and they'll get day of suspension with pay while you get jail/a ticket.
Also it's a great idea to argue with a cop that you just saw doing something that you deemed worthy of recording, like killing a dude while he begs for his life.

A day of suspension for beating a helpless drunken individual to death?
A day of suspension for beating a helpless drunken individual to death?
I'm guessing that's merely the start of being fired later
snip, moved down

Pretty much, I honestly think that some people comply with this so they can deliberately say "they stole my phone in a coverup" and start an outrage.

I'm pretty sure recording people in general without their permission is a no-no
Could anyone who knows a little more abut US law clarify this?
Congratulations on further proving my point that people are okay with a flawed police system. If police brutality is ever mixed with your day to day life, you'll find yourself giving a shit about the "it's black and white" statement I made.
you realize that viewing entire groups as 'black and white' is how kristallnacht got kicked off, among several other notable lessons in history
maybe I'm misinterpreting your view, and you're not being critical of 100% of the police force, but to say "fuck the group" because of the actions of 9 people out of about 1,100,000 is just... yeah
that's not to say that these 9 individuals shouldn't be punished to the fullest extent of the law (they should), but saying "fuck the po-lice" makes you and anyone else who says it look like a dipshit gangbanger wannabe
Pretty much, I honestly think that some people comply with this so they can deliberately say "they stole my phone in a coverup" and start an outrage.
Or because they're afraid of the cops who just beat a guy to death.
This is insane.

recording people on public property is A-OK in any state without retarded luddite laws, but since this happened on the sidewalk that's kind of a gray area
gray areas typically let the police act first and have their actions reviewed later, in this case it seems to me like the police were actually technically in the right for collecting the evidence (if they had the intent to preserve it and use it in the case review (they probably didn't)), that's kind of a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't situation
but saying "fuck the po-lice" makes you and anyone else who says it look like a dipshit gangbanger wannabe
Maybe I'm misinterpreting, but I don't think that was his point at all
I'm not condoning beating men to death while they're begging for their lives but let's all stop for a second and remember the trayvon martin threads
I don't remember a single person saying "maybe the facts aren't all here" for those first few news reports, but after a few months the evidence pretty much pointed to the exact opposite of what the first reports on it tried to imply
no matter what happened on this night, I hope the truth comes to light, and every party is given what they deserve, whether that's peace, forgiveness, or prison

maybe it wasn't, but not a single SH thread goes by without a handful of posts like that
the headlines could be "officer rescues baby from woodchipper" and some idiot would still find a way to justify their irrational hatred for a huge group of people
Pretty much, I honestly think that some people comply with this so they can deliberately say "they stole my phone in a coverup" and start an outrage.
I honestly think you changed your avatar so people don't realize who you are immediatly and you can troll more successfully.

but you can question what must be wrong with the institution itself that such individuals can even exist. what kind of training (or lack of) must they be receiving if this kind of shit can happen? and i mean yes, some people are just fuckwits etc, but how come these people are able to become cops? i personally feel the requirements to become a cop are far too lenient, i know this is anecdotal but every cop i've spoken to has told me about their lack of even a high school education

It wasn't my point. I clarified though out the thread several times I was not one of the many skid marks on society who say "fuck the police".
The lesson is truly lost on you.

This guy actually gets it, thank you.

A lot of the people who do that type of thing are the kind who get off to pretending they live in a police-state. I'm not saying that was the case here, but it definitely has happened.
but you can question what must be wrong with the institution itself that such individuals can even exist. what kind of training (or lack of) must they be receiving if this kind of shit can happen? and i mean yes, some people are just fuckwits etc, but how come these people are able to become cops? i personally feel the requirements to become a cop are far too lenient, i know this is anecdotal but every cop i've spoken to has told me about their lack of even a high school education
christopher dorner probably didn't seem like a psycho when he passed the rigorous physical and mental conditioning to become a SEAL, just sayin
I'd actually agree that the standards aren't high enough but that's for another thread
Do the police in america have a commission for crime and misconduct? From the sounds of it, it's like they can get away with pretty much anything.
Whereas, where I live, if the cops do so much as hit you without any reason, as soon as a complaint comes in, that officer is suspended pending a formal decision by CMC (Crime & Misconduct Comission). It's like police but who investigate other police officers.

well, i feel like the american military has the exact same problem when it comes to training and screening unbalanced individuals
No it didn't?
'man shoots unarmed innocent baby boy that never lifted a finger against him'
'neighborhood watch shoots high school football quarterback after having his head bashed into concrete; two burglaries were recently committed in the same neighborhood'
only a special kind of douche would still insist today that zimmerman was a racist but that was pretty much the default response of everyone when the story broke

That's actually similar to what happens here as well, only I believe we call it Internal Affairs. Like I said before, you just don't hear about that, or the thousands of police doing their job correctly, because that doesn't get as many hits as police brutality stories.
i know this is anecdotal but every cop i've spoken to has told me about their lack of even a high school education
police encounters are like the only accepted use of anecdotes on facepunch
This just...
I think I need to lie down.
