• Mars' entire surface was shaped by water
i think mars was an ocean planet, Like mostly all ocean, land was a small part of it.
Shame it wasn't still all ocean, it would of made a nice forward outpost for deep space travel even if it would have no land. Well, at least we solved what Mars once was.
It would be beautiful to have a second planet
*Pic* Hope it becomes like this in the next 100-300 years.
Not to be captain obvious. but, for water to change Mars surface, it would have to mean it's ALREADY been through it's "earth" phase. Mars is what earth will look like when earth dies. (no, fuck global warming, we're talking combination of many factors that are natural for planets that sustained life once. like slowing spin, weakening atmosphere.. all'a that.) [editline]07:04PM[/editline]
It would be beautiful to have a second planet
how about we start with actually keeping our moon? It's kinda slowly drifting away...
how about we start with actually keeping our moon? It's kinda slowly drifting away...
Oh dear :( We should go get relationship councelling with the Moon.

Its a talked about possibility other than finding another planet in a nearby system. As for Earth dieing, it depends on what happens in the future with our rising technology. Will it die, or will it be changed to something greater? I can see Earth as a massive city planet by the time the year 2700 (in my estimate) comes, but with preservation of key forests and nature areas such as the Amazon to keep the beauty of Earth's nature. As for the moon, we can terraform it when we develop the technology to terraform planets and moons that has no atmosphere. It will take a longer progress than terraforming Mars, but its a possibility if our technology continues. I can see how it would have water and became the way it is now. Notice how the earth is getting hotter and more dry? It's probably what happened to Mars. All dried up with no life.
I can see how it would have water and became the way it is now. Notice how the earth is getting hotter and more dry? It's probably what happened to Mars. All dried up with no life.
Yes, Mars became a lifeless rock because of how hot it became.
I can see how it would have water and became the way it is now. Notice how the earth is getting hotter and more dry? It's probably what happened to Mars. All dried up with no life.
It has been evident that this progress of changing temperatures is a part of Earth's natural cycle. There has been periods of hot weather that leads to periods of cool weather, and if one is to look at certain areas, they could figure this out. I am not one to say that what is happening with the weather is or is not our fault, but I would not be surprised if our theory of global warming is just another part of Earth's natural cycle. Mars, on the other hand, was probably dried up due to some other process. Dunno what, but I hope we can figure that out in the near future.
Come on prothean ruins
It's so strange that we are looking for planets like earth all across the galaxy, but one that was actually earth-like and contained water is right next door, same thing with life too.
Wow, really is interesting. Hm, let's dig a deep hole into Mars and see what's there. Maybe we'll find some skeletons/ruins of former life?
Space news=Coolest news.
If venus is earth sister... Mars is earth Brother
u r so cute :3
If Mars was just like Earth, it makes you wonder about the lifeforms. Were they completely Human like?
Mars, on the other hand, was probably dried up due to some other process. Dunno what, but I hope we can figure that out in the near future.
The problem with Mars is its size, roughly half the diameter and 15% the mass of Earth(or something like that) which means it had a much weaker Magnetic field. It also means that the planet's core would eventually harden, meaning no magnetic field at all. As you might know, Earth's magnetic field is what protects us, and more importantly the atmosphere, from all that harmful solar wind and solar flares, without it, and as happened on Mars, the atmosphere literally gets blown away. So with a low atmospheric pressure, you can't sustain liquid water -and that is why Mars is now dry. Shame really, would have made a great backup should anything have happened here.
Mars needs to hurry the fuck up and become habitable. I don't have time for this mortality thing to keep me from seeing a bi-planetary humanity.
Mars needs to hurry the fuck up and become habitable. I don't have time for this mortality thing to keep me from seeing a bi-planetary humanity.
We need to find out if there's life on mars before we do anything with it. If there is, we shouldn't screw with something that's already habitable for other life.
Do you know how late this is? I learned that used to be covered with water/life months ago...
inb4 public goes "derp, this mean there are alinz on marz and comin to blow us awp!!!!"
Fuck that, aliens aren't gay enough to make awps.

Prothean ruins keep getting more and more likely
Weren't micro-organisms discovered on Mars a while ago?
Nope. If we did there would be scientists partying on the streets all over the world like drunk highschool kids :v: Closest thing we've found are things that look like fossilized microorganisms in meteorites that originate from mars http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martian_meteorite [editline]02:20PM[/editline]
Prothean ruins keep getting more and more likely
why do people keep saying this in every mars thread

This is exactly why we must land on mars. To an astronomer, like myself, I view Mars as the most plausible pinnacle of exploration and discovery for the human race in the near future.
Mass Effect is a good game.
yes but why mass effect out of the thousands of other tv shows and movies that have made a passing reference to mars
yes but why mass effect out of the thousands of other tv shows and movies that have made a passing reference to mars
Because recent games more easily come to mind, especially considering the audience it appeals to is practically the same audience who browses the forum.
Wow, really is interesting. Hm, let's dig a deep hole into Mars and see what's there. Maybe we'll find some skeletons/ruins of former life?
Union Aerospace already did that. And that turned out REALLY well.
And Vice-Versa for Earth.
why would you hope for most of earth's oceans and atmosphere to be blasted away
why would you hope for most of earth's oceans and atmosphere to be blasted away
Some people always just look at the bad things in life, I dunno.
