Intelligence whistleblower Edward Snowden is to stand for the post of student rector at Glasgow University. The nomination of the former US intelligence officer, who has temporary asylum in Russia, was arranged by a group of students through his lawyer. Elections for the three-year post will take place next month. Other candidates for rector are cyclist Graeme Obree, author Alan Bissett and Scottish Episcopal clergyman Kelvin Holdsworth. Previous rectors include Winnie Mandela and Mordechai Vanunu. The position is currently held by former Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy. 'Brave whistleblower' Glasgow University said all the nominees had personally agreed to take part in the election.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-25830364
too bad if he were to get on a plane again it would mysteriously divert straight to washington DC, and there would be a nice parade of black SUVs waiting for him

Glasgow has an airport. A man once kicked a burning terrorist there in the balls so hard, he tore a tendon in his foot.
I'm a Glasgow student, and this is the first I've heard of this. It would be interesting to have such a well-known and influential figure as our rector, but I'm left wondering why he would come here in particular when the rest of Europe is available.

He's better off staying safe in Mother Russia since the GCHQ are pretty much going to try currying favor with the USA by locking him up and sending him back there to await trial.

I heard he lit a fag off the terrorists burning body. I'd like to see Snowden as rector, a lot of my mates are at Glasgow uni, and I might end up buying him a jagerbomb or 5 in the union at some point. If that does happen, I'm not sure the Scottish would cooperate completely with GCHQ.
Well, it's worth considering that Scotland might be an independant country come september. The current rector, Charles Kennedy, holds occasional Q&A sessions. If Snowden is elected and continues this standard, they might have a problem seating everyone. There have been rectors in the past who have been given the title with both parties knowing full well that they will not be able to fulfil the role properly due to other obligations, such as Winnie Mandela and Mordechai Vanunu. If Snowden feels he won't be able to leave Glasgow airport with his hands not in cuffs, he could always take the position in this fashion.
that's not going to happen though despite the referendum, nobody wants to be independent, apart from literally a handful of people
I wouldn't put it that extremely, but almost all of the media I've seen or read recently has been pro-union or at least skeptical.
Glasgow has an airport. A man once kicked a burning terrorist there in the balls so hard, he tore a tendon in his foot.
I thought you were joking but
It was reported that Smeaton shouted "fuckin' mon, then" and aimed a kick in the testicles at Kafeel Ahmed, who later died from his 90% burns following the attack.

After he saw the police grappling with one of the attackers, he thought: "You're no' hitting the Polis mate, there's nae chance."[12] Describing his own actions: "So I ran straight towards the guy, we're all trying to get a kick-in at him, take a boot to subdue the guy."[12] Asked by ITV News what his message to terrorists was, he said: "Glasgow doesn't accept this. This is Glasgow; we'll set aboot ye."
what the christ
