Yoko Taro addresses the 2B butt controversy by asking people to put outrageous pics in a zip
This is implying that 2B won't be weirdly semi-sexualized, like Kaine and Zero were.
Kaine wasn't semi-sexualized, she was full on sexualized, she wears skimpy lingerie with bouncy lace titties.
You should put a bit of context into the article. I (and I'm sure some other people) have no idea what this is about.
I mean it's pretty easy to figure out if you look at the article for 30 seconds. I had no clue what this was until clicking the link and now I'm pretty sure it's just people getting buttmad about a (female) character having a large unclothed ass
and the developer going "lmao by the way can you send nudes in a zip so it's easier to find them thanks"
Well that's just an entirely subjective thing, isn't it?
I guess but it's not like the writing for the character in the canon changes at all
I guess but it's not like the writing for the character in the canon changes at all
Well yeah I know I'm essentially entirely wrong, and that I should be thinking "live and let live", but something about people making & obsessing over porn about pretty much any character has always irked me.
I guess I just don't get the point of it.
I might be wrong in this, but I think it's because, in general Japanese culture puts far less taboo on porn. It's not that porn is necessarily accepted in Japan, but rather that it isn't shunned. There isn't nearly as much shame in the idea of someone enjoying porn in Japan - it's just another passtime, like anything else, and porn is considered an entirely legitimate and fair industry.
I could be entirely misremembering all of this and have everything completely wrong, though. This is just what the cobwebs in my brain are pointing me to.
Japan's relationship with sex and sexuality is extremely bipolar. I just got back from a vacation in Tokyo with my fiancee, and we both marveled at how the city seemed to be wildly sexual and incredibly repressed and/or conservative. Certain things were A-okay that seemed pretty bizarre by American standards, and other seemingly normal things were totally taboo.
Our hotel was in smack dab in the middle of the infamous Kabukicho district. It is Japan's biggest adult entertainment area and red light district. We didn't plan that at all, it just kinda worked out that way. Though prostitution in terms of actual sex is illegal, literally everything else imaginable is on the table for the interested shopper, including some pretty unique shit like soapy massages and blowjob bars. And this is in no way underground. Signs are literally EVERYWHERE you look, and at night there are people on the streets urging you towards their various adult services and bars. The one night I was out late by myself (to go to the arcade and play Gunslinger Stratosphere, which is fucking dope) I couldn't go five feet without being accosted by a street punter.
"Hey, tall boy, you like titties? You want girls? No? How about boy, you like some boys? We got boys!"
The second I'd shake one off, another would materialize.
The only firsthand taste of Kabukicho's adult entertainment we actually experienced was going to a strip theater together, and even that was surreal. It was a proper show for two out of three songs that each dancer performed. A dancer would come out in an elaborate costume, perform a pretty fantastic choreographed dance routine, complete with props, and generally impress everybody. Some were better than others, but it was actually impressive and artistic work for the most part. Then, in the third or fourth song, the dancer would just fully strip and start giving everybody long looks at her crotch, or masturbating. One brought out another performer, and they used a damn dildo. It was all totally unexpected! The first 80% of each set was deeply artistic performance dance, and then, without warning: Pow! Full penetration dildo on a rotating stage.
There was an older fellow next to me who slept throughout the entire show, a good hour and a half. He only woke up at the very end, when all the performers came back on stage to toss their panties to the crowd. Like, that's the only thing he was there for. One of the dancers happened to toss hers directly to my fiancee and I, and he damn near spilled out of his chair. He looked so sad to have missed them. Since we had no pressing need for used panties, we handed them to him. Good deed for the day, I guess.
Anyway, at the end of a two week stay, I was just as confused about Japanese sex culture as before went. More so probably. It is both way more conservative AND way more wild than the US.

Let's be completely fair though that she kinda had a good reason to dress like that and it was never about fanservice. [sp]Also she kinda had male parts as well so I think that might of deterred her being pure fanservice for a lot of folks.[/sp]
Kaine's body is kind of a important plot point

no, pornography won't affect the character's official canon
so should i ;play the first nier in order to understand whats going on in this one? never played it but this new one seems pretty different in terms of gameplay? are they related
Everyone is talking about the female lead but what about the guy??

You're repressed as fuck if you think porn of a character ruins them.

In this order:
Look up/read a synopsis on Drakengard 3's ending D
Look up/read a synopsis on Drakengard but focus on ending E
Look up/read all of Nier (It looks like a lot but it's worth it)
This is where it gets odd(er). There was a Japanese stage play that's considered 100% canon that connects the story of Nier and Automata. It's insanely important to what's going on in the plot if you don't want to go in blind. Just ask someone (like me!) for details and I'll gladly type up a outline of what happened.
Nier Automata's trailers have shown previous characters returning and some stuff from that stage play so it's a good idea to catch up, at least a little bit. If someone asks though I'll make a biiiiiiiiig NieR timeline synopsis though as I love the hell out of that game and whatnot.
Couple of my friends are really hyped for this game and I've never even heard of it.

I like to hope that by all technicality the game itself will hopefully be standalone enough in its own plot, but I get the feeling given that because it's Yoko Taro, this won't be the case.

nier has a fucking huge companion book that can be found online that delves super into things not in the game.
I know little about Japan, but from the snippets of their culture I've heard about, it seems they suffer a lot of cognitive dissonance over sexual matters. e.g They are okay with porn being apart of their culture yet they have weird censorship of genitalia, and their culture seems uncomfortable with actual sex in many instances (such as their declining sex rate).
I think Japan's declining birth rate has more to do with their work culture than any kind of taboo over sex
Kaine's design is one of the few things that I genuinely don't like about the first Nier game, there's so many ways that they could have depicted her other than in lingerie. Especially since she is probably the most interesting character in that game

Honestly I think it was kind of geniusly subversive, and I'm not big on fan service. It was justified with story reasons, tied into her character, and [sp] made it even more surprising when you found out she was actually a hermaphrodite. It somehow felt weirdly empowering to her character that she was ok with flaunting her feminity despite her past insecurities. Back when she was younger I remember reading that she used to dress very modestly in order not to stand out. [/sp] Blatant fanservice for the sake of tits and ass is the worst though, and at first that's what I thought Kaine came across as. She is genuinely one of the most interesting women in gaming though, once you know her back story.
Yeah Kaine is written in such a way that I honestly think that if you want to censor her you're doing it solely for the sake of censoring her. It totally makes sense in terms of the story and not once is it portrayed as something good (as in "Hey everyone should dress this way" I mean, it's a empowering thing for the character)
Also the companion book Grimoire NieR doesn't has the story that has the inbetween of Drakengard 1 -> NieR. That being said it super super spoils NieR's bigger plot twists so it's something you may wanna peek at after you finish the original game.
Let's be completely fair though that she kinda had a good reason to dress like that and it was never about fanservice. [sp]Also she kinda had male parts as well so I think that might of deterred her being pure fanservice for a lot of folks.[/sp]

ahahahahahaha.
That only makes her better for most people
Please don't let the internet trick you into thinking most people are fine with that kinda thing. [sp]Her entire backstory is probably pretty accurate to how she'd be treated if word got out irl.[/sp]

Even the necrophilia?
Yoko Taro does a lot of weird shit to convey themes, ideas and messages , it usually isn't about fan service.
Just watch a vid about breaking down original Drakengard JP release, shits pretty fucked.

This was when Japan was opening up to western business as a way of bringing their culture more in line with western values as to not disgust us
[sp]It totally backfired[/sp]

Playing gunslinger competitively (local pvp, not a tournament) was one of the more insane things I did during my stay at Japan.
I thought people got excited when playing MOBAS, but that was something else.

There's actually not a dichotomy, you just have a different cultural perspective.
The rule is you don't talk about fight club, that's really it. You go to the fights, you participate or don't, you just don't broadcast it to the general populace about it.
The barker thing is interesting is because it's essentially a crass westernization of what used to be a purely visual and "understated thing". There used to be overt displays, but they were literally visual and nothing else; you know where to go, and what was going on, and that was enough.
This also applies to sexuality. For the most part being gay in japan is perfectly fine except for some hyper conservative elements, like oddly enough, the criminal element. You just don't talk about it or express it openly in public unless it's one the culturally approved methods like comedy or performance art.

What.
[...]
why are japanese devs superior in this dept
Japan has a history on being liberal on an individual level.
No Christian roots aka their culture/religion didn't vilify sex for hundreds of years.
Also, what are you supposed to do when the work culture makes relationships nearly impossible to achieve, die of blue balls? :smug:
