I'm really surprised that so much of FP actually buys the horrendously bad excuse they make to keep this blatantly xenophobic law around.
FP is full of young white male teens who have no regard for culture and practices different from theirs
it's to be expected.
I can understand the burqa banning or whatever those full face concealment things are but if you can see someone's face i don't really see too much of an issue. I don't see it as racism considering white girls in the middle east get spat on for wearing skirts and having their arms showing and that's absolutely okay and fine because it's not that countries culture!

So you should do the same exact thing.

Oh look, not allowed any non-islamic things in Saudi Arabia, I say, an eye for an eye and bring the same
rule here.
that even seems harsh to me, I'd go for leave your religious items at home, not bring them outside.
So you want your government to be backwards and take away your freedom of speech?
Hmmm okay.
Damn, this blatantly paranoid law is still around?
Shame on you France, stop trying to force a dress-code on people, if they want to conceal the face it's their decision not yours.

If that was a burqa they wouldn't find them.
also, try talking to someone through a letterbox, its a bit uncomfortable.
"Masks used in "traditional activities", such as carnivals or religious processions"
Wow, don't arabic face veils fall into this category?

Yeah but a carnival doesn't last forever.

A man who gives up Liberty for Temporary Safety deserves neither.
Common guys, I know facepunch is generally un-accepting of foreign cultures but agreeing to this is just crazy.

How is that true? Facepunch has members from all over the world
It's called freedom of speech.
You can bargain about the law and even do giant meetings against it, no one is going to arrest you.
Also good job claiming the French is a bunch of xenophobic prejudiced dicks while you clearly have no idea of what's going on there. I don't have anything against telling what you think of us and this law, but don't tell it like it's an admitted, universal, uncontroversial fact that everyone knows and accepts.
It's like calling all people living in new-york gays because gay marriage is allowed there.
How is that true? Facepunch has members from all over the world
Having members from other countries means people are accepting of foreign (Muslim in this case) culture?
That's kinda close to the "I have lots of black friends" excuse.
What I'm on about is the general "theme" in this thread is that people agree with this law, when it's infringing on another culture for no good reason.
I find it hard to accept for the whole “In Public” clause. Dress codes in establishments are part of safety or that enviroment for example, I take my motorcycle helmet off when entering a petrol station and no trainers in clubs but in public? I find that hard to agree to.
I support the right for them to wear the niqab in public just as I support the right for them to wear nothing whatsoever in public.
I don't understand why everyone doesn't want this niqab thing banned. It's the country's decision, not yours. Muslims should learn to respect the decisions of the ruler of the place they live in.

Thank you Louis XIV your objection is duly noted.

Well, not just Muslims. Everyone should. If you don't like the laws of the place you live in, move somewhere where you do.

I don't think you understand how representative government works.

You really believe that laws should be irrefutable, that nations know best for all within them?
"Pretty bad" is downplaying it. It's blatantly prejudicial. This is state-sponsored discrimination against Muslims.
Apparently, everything that masks your face is banned from use in public, which if anything makes it at least not state sponsored discrimination against muslims
You really believe that laws should be irrefutable, that nations know best for all within them?
The laws are not meant to be broken. They are there for a reason.
Don't forget about stockings

Damn, just watching that almost makes me want to start a religion where you wear stockings on your head.
Just for trolling purposes obviously.
The laws are not meant to be broken. They are there for a reason.
The pure fact of something being a law doesn't necessarily make it right
The laws are not meant to be broken. They are there for a reason.
wow shit you're really into functionalism yeh?
frightens me that someone can be so passive
The laws are not meant to be broken. They are there for a reason.
I hate to pull a Godwin's law, but you know. It was kind of the Law of Nazi Germany to kill all Jews.
This doesn't make it okay. Sure, its a very extreme comparison, but my point stands. Not all laws are useful or good. Laws are also never set in stone. They need to adapt to the community and the country throughout time.
The laws are not meant to be broken. They are there for a reason.
And the reason is largely xenophobic.
i.e. a shit reason

Pretty much
The law is the law. If I were to disagree with the law that forbids me to shoot people in the face, would it be a commendable act or a criminal offense?
They are essentially doing this, to get into the court system and challenge the law in court for human rights, which they cannot do unless they go trough the french court system first.
This will never go through the court for human rights though, it's not a human right to wear something totally covering your face and preventing people from recognizing you, especially because the law isn't applying to Muslims and the niqab specifically.
Making an exception in the law, like "Masks used in "traditional activities", such as carnivals or religious processions, except Muslims" would be discriminatory and stupid.
