The whole thought behind this, though the action seems wierd, is for the liberty of people.
That's fucking retarded, when I like something, it means I want people to know I like it and it also changes the little advertisements on the side according to what I like, which is really really useful as both an advertiser and a consumer.

It tracks you if you don't like something. Its how the entire system is designed to work, liking something is just a public notification that you have been on the site. Facebook still track that you have been to that site and use it to build up a picture of you.

Oh I see. Yeah, that is pretty bad.

It works in the same way that Google does it with ads, but they don't try to hide it. Its quite clear that an ad tracks what you do.

Google also has a webpage where you can go and check what it's figured out about you and remove stuff you don't want there.
They track which sites you have visited with a facebook like button. And probably use it to add specific types of advertisements to your profile page. AKA, target you for specific ads which is probably illegal in Germany. I support this as Germany is the first country to actually do something about user privacy.

And you can opt out really easily, to opt out of facebook's tracking you have to basically block facebook from your PC.

It might be related to the EU law regarding third party cookies. It is technically illegal for a site in the EU to set non site crucial cookies now.
i agree that liking things will change what ads you see, just saying
but Germany, what the hell, this is just stupid
Or just don't click the fucking button
God damn rocket science guys
I only ever 'like' stuff people actually post on facebook.
Oh no, being social on a social network?!
People should read the thread before replying.
Seems like the German government doesn't like "kewl kidz"
It tracks you visiting the page even if you don't like it.
As does every ad in existence ever. This is no different from what they do.
They're targeting the wrong people with this, instead of telling websites whose ads or content they can place on their website, they should be monitoring what kind of data Facebook, and other web-ad services are logging.

But ads are opt-out'able in various ways. You can't opt out of this.
Ok someone needs to make a hitler angry at facebook like being banned using that clip from downfall!

It tracks you anyways.
I am actually kind of glad this is implemented.
What the actual fuck facebook... You are no different from a spyware infested shitsite now.
But ads are opt-out'able in various ways. You can't opt out of this.
You mean Adblock and similar services?
That could very easily be modified to filter out the Like button aswell.
The OP needs to edit in that the issue lies in the fact that it keeps track of what sites you visit regardless of whether or not you click the button. It even tracks you regardless of if you have a Facebook account or not so that if you do eventually sign up for an account it'll already have collected a bunch of information about you.

You can opt out of most ads by setting a cookie, the service actually offers to the opt out system. You are probably right about adblock though, I guess it could be used by the people who really don't want this.
In other news, websites must place the "+1" button on their website. I have my facebook in Spanish, so the like button says "ME GUSTA"
Does Germany realise that they have no jurisdiction outside their own country?
I live in Schleswig-Holstein :ninja:
With all the problems we have at the moment, we have time for trivial shit like this?
This is brilliant. A country actually taking a stand for web privacy and user rights.
But liking is totally optional and so is making an FB page, and the lack of web privacy is...well, they have advertisements that are specified to people with particular interests.
Google also has a webpage where you can go and check what it's figured out about you and remove stuff you don't want there.
Could you link that please? You've intrigued me

You make it sound like one person does everything.
