I'll remind everyone that Eisenhower was at first a general and then became a President, and as far as I can tell was a pretty good one.
Then again, I'm under the impression every president from FDR to LBJ was great.
And then came Nixon. Who while did good things, then went and did Watergate.
The office simply hasn't been the same sense...

Grant was also a general and was awful.

Grant also inherited a nation that only 5 years ago had split apart from civil war, a country that had faced the assassination for their own leader and a country that was radically different from today.
I must admit I don't know all the details about his presidency, or that era, but honestly? The fact the United States survived what happened was an achievement.
