We feel less compassion to one of our own because it's more or less common, doggy-deaths aren't exactly at the forefront of breaking news so we feel sadder.
Of course there's millions of unreported dog abuse cases throughout the world, but when we boil it down to an individual unit it's more "emotional" because we know about the individual in question.
What sounds more saddening?
"1 thousand dogs die in blaze"
"1 dog dies in horrific blaze due to neglect by owner"
The media always seem to do this, they over... what's the word - exaggerate? (or something else) in articles like these.
Then again this is my opinion so I don't exactly feel bad for the people/person in question because I don't know them, heartless, but deaths happen - deal with it.
This on the other hand is different.
