Oh.
When I signed up I got 2 free invites, but "Because the user limit has been reached you are unable to send invites at this time."
Turns out gmail threw it in spam which is a rarity
I always hate seeing an old site end.
What's interesting is where people will end up. Usually, when one site ends, you go to another.
Ask yourself, where would you post on if Fp closed?
damn it I can't get into gazelle either because its full :(
I hate that the OP says "has gone the way of megaupload and demonoid". It wasn't shut down for the same reasons at all. They couldn't find any trustworthy people to carry on the site when they wanted to step down, that's all.

to quote what a mod said
1. bitGAMER has closed down. This is not a joke.
2. We tried to find new, trusted owners to carry the torch, but after years of attempts fell though, we had no choice but to close down the site. We wouldn't be willing to transfer sensitive database data to a third-party that we're not well acquainted with.
3. We didn't give advance warning due to the nature of the site. We don't want to give any advance notice in case someone was ready to kick someone's door in at the last minute.
4. If you are a donor, then we greatly appreciate your support that allowed bitGAMER to live a long, successful life in the service of its community. If you donated within the last month, then you can contact an administrator to get a refund.
5. We are shutting down because it's time for us to move on. There are no secret meaning beyond what was posted on the front page.
6. Lastly, thanks again for all of your support over the years. 7 years is a long time for any site to live, especially a site of this nature. We appreciate your support which has allowed us such a long life. Thank you.

I check the site almost every day when I get up, it's a shame it had to go down. :/ but it's understandable I suppose. It was definitely a good run.
I totally thought it was a prank too, I was like... "this is going to go away by tomorrow right? This is just an early scare, RIGHT? ;_;"
Well, if you're looking for a similar site that has more current linux distros Blackcats is open for registration now.
I know where I'm going though, I gotta have my linux distros fix.
Not sure if anyone else did, but I had a pretty negative ratio ( .5 ) and then hours before it shut down I got gifted back to a 1.0 ratio from the guy who invited me. I was checking /v/ like I always do and saw all the threads about it being shut down and thought it was a hoax since I was on it probably 2 hours before. :(
this is a sad start to the year :(((
also wtf none of my friends can invite me to gazelle for some reason
all good things must come to an end...

Gazelle is full. With the influx of new members the limit was reached quite fast.

aw yiss
bitgamer page was updated with a link to the forums as well as a non-linked text named "bitgamer archives"

That's a bit sad
What happened is precisely what was posted on the front page of bG.
There was no dramas, no backstabbing, no misappropriation of funds, no threat or warning signs of doors being kicked in... None of that.
What this was, and I don't know how to be any more clearer, simply put the case of a staff understanding and accepting that we could not continue to expect a person to carry the full brunt of responsibility who hasn't wanted it for a long time coming. Many attempts were made to put the site into the hands of someone else willing to take on the responsibilty of protecting our users. Without that assurance, there is no other acceptable alternative.
All you need to know is that 60K users' well-being and interests were being looked after vigilantly by a person who was all too aware that it was at a cost to his own. There was no one else to take it. Believe me, we tried, and we tried for too long.
The way we went out, it was hard on us. We knew you'd feel betrayed, let down. The fact of the matter is that there was no other way to go without putting every single person at risk. As we got rid of everything on the server, it hurt us. Many of the staff have YEARS of work vested and its' gone. It's all gone, so that you guys are free to go about with confidence knowing your details were looked after as they should have been.
It's probably not my place to put it out here like this, but w/e. Look at us like assholes who gamed you or chose to ignore how you guys would feel and react without understanding, but nothing could have been further from the truth.

Even though some of your rules on distro packaging etc were insane, you will be sorely missed, BG
