Did you forget the set bonuses that require hats?
So much for no gameplay effects.
Oh, and maybe that the items required to craft a weapon have pretty much tripled from what it was, plus the large influx of new weapons, had no gameplay effect either?
People getting weapons from preorder bonuses?
Believe it or not, but since valve has started adding community weapons and selling them, the gameplay has changed pretty massively.
I have never noticed somebody being overpowered because of a set bonus and besides. They have drawbacks as well. AND you can acquire the sets without paying..
I'm sure Valve will come up with something new and mindblowing. And if they can't, they are simply not gonna do it.
Splinter Cell, Hitman, Rainbow Six, Doom. Problem is, so many games now include RPG style elements or open worlds that its hard to find games without them now. I'd rather see RPG elements in the Half-Life games than multiplayer, because that allows me to develop as I see fit, to make my experience more closely fit me than just a simple preset.
[editline]25th April 2011[/editline]
Ohh yeah, Uncharted and Tomb Raider.
Hell, those aren't really games that fit me, but I still really like them.
I'm beginning to understand why you didn't enjoy Coop and complain about other people.
Okay Gabe, if you're done with singleplayer I am done with you and your company.
ITT: People coming to conclusions about Valve and their future without knowing anything.
Just because they want to focus on online play doesn't instantly mean that their games will be bad from now on. I prefer coop over singleplayer. Anything is better when you play it with your friends. But that is my opinion.
And people whine over hats and whatnot for no reason. It really shows how good Valve's games are. People can't find any real flaws and just decide to whine about things that do not matter.
Might as well slap a fanboy sticker on your head and hold up a downs sign here, this has got to be the worst argument I've ever heard.
People are whining about hats BECAUSE they liked valve games, and to those of us who are still sane enough to look critically at things we LIKED, see that this is going down a bad path. Valve are one of the very few developers that still try to make original games, but they seem to be in reach of abandoning that in favor of adding stupid cash shops to games and releasing new games that are just remakes of old games nintendo style.
It seems more likely that they want to make the single player campaigns of their future games co-op compatible, rather than killing off single player completely. It seems like a great idea to me; I'd love to be able to play through the main story line with a friend, rather than play some off shoot co-op campaign that has almost nothing to do with the actual plot
Shut the fuck up about the hats
It started out as a joke due to the recent trend of adding items to games that don't really need them and then the "tf2 was the same as it was from 2007" patrol rolled in and started creating shitstorms.
Co-op is lots of fun, because doing stuff with your friends is great. However, laughing it up with your mates is not the same thing as getting immersed in a single-playing experience. I'd like to have both, but not at the same time.
If they do make these co-op adaptations of the single-player campaigns I hope it remains optional. First play-through; Alone. Second-to-n play-through; with friends - That would be great.
Valve has been steadily declining in my opinion lately.

I guess I am one of the 2007 guys. Tf2 was better when it was a game and not a fashion show.
I think this thread warrants the return of Bad Reading.
It doesn't mean that Valve will stop doing Singleplayer campaigns, it will just mean that Singleplayer games will have a multiplayer component in that game.
This whole thread is filled with over reactionary, knee jerk bullshit about how valve is now the worst ever because people here apparently lack reading comprehension. If multiplayer is full of idiots, it's got a lot of posters in this thread because you obviously didn't take the time to read.
Valve is simply doing what they have to, now they'll be packaging all their experiences into either an optional co-op feature or a multiplayer feature. I'm fairly sure you can still play a game on your lonesome. Key point and example, BRINK, coming out in a few days is ONLY a multiplayer game. But, you can play it alone with bots. That's what they're likely aiming for.
I don't see them doing a co-op with Gordon and Alyx, since she is a developed character that talks and plays a large role in the game.
But maybe another character, Gordon and Barney co-op? Though Barney is also a developed character who talks, though doesn't play as large a role in the game as Alyx.
Gordon and Sheperd? This seems the most probable of the three. Since Sheperd is a player only character, he never speaks, never even see him. So Valve would be able to work with this nicely.
Also I agree with CaptainQuirk, Valve isn't as good was it used to be.
I fail to see how a player character can't be a talkative character.
No? Valve is getting worse? Man, that's odd, I keep enjoying their games more and more.

It's really ridiculous to believe that TF2 would be a popular and active game today if they hadn't started changing it. It'd still have a community obviously, but it wouldn't be the big award winning game it currently is. People here just can't handle change apparently.
I guess I am one of the 2007 guys. Tf2 was better when it was a game and not a fashion show.
I used to think like that too but then I realized that the game is 4 years old and th time I slowly grew tired of it coincidently fell together with the time they introduced more and more items.
I reseted my stats just before the first items where people with longer playtime got more items and that was the time I first was frustrated. I'll give you that.
Hence my lack of weapons and hats.

I'd rather not have Half-life Co-op. Let's leave the mods to that.

I really don't see, in any way whatsoever, how any of the main Half-Life games (except for those expansions where you don't play as Freeman) will work as a co-op game, optional or not
co-op characters cannot have dialogue - how would they convey any sort of serious-ness if they keep jumping around everywhere while talking
now you can add cutscenes but then that's a bad idea for a half-life game
[editline]wef[/editline]
also you say this thread is full of people criticizing valve for no big reason but then, on the other end of the spectrun, it's also full of people defending valve that labels almost every single complaints as 'whining', or 'nickpicking'

Yes I like Valve games a lot. That doesn't mean that I am blindly defending them.
I just think that it is stupid how people moan over cosmetic items.
I however agree with you on the fact that they could be on the brink of just making remakes. Portal 2 was very different and building upon Portal's original concept while Left 4 Dead 2 was just a bunch of new maps and models. As long as they don't do that in the future I think it'll be fine.
Remember when valves business model was bringing new things to the table with great storylines and fun, moddable engines to explore?

Yeah that what Portal 2 was all about. Hats. Nothing but fucking hats. All GLaDOS even talked about was fucking hats.

Except, i'm not defending valve to the end, I'm attacking idiotic knee jerk reactions from 90% of the community here. You can't possibly say you know how the company is going because fucking Gabe doesn't know where he wants to take it yet.
The only point I have is that not one us really knows what's going to happen, so calling the valve-ocalypse as oncoming is fucking stupid.
And as for Co-op working in half life, yeah, I know you can't figure it out, it's not your job to. But someone will. And, who said you had to play with someone? I've never seen a co-op game where you HAD to play with someone and can't just do it alone, unless it's a specific and separate co-op game type.
I'd rather not have Half-life Co-op. Let's leave the mods to that.
Ha ha, because Synergy was great...!
I would like it to be supported, but I don't want them to shape their campaign around it.

Only MP = Fuck Valve

I guess you didn't even play Portal 2 considering it had "Great storylinse, fun" and it'll probably be modded.
Or are you just jumping on the "fuck valve" bandwagon that's started because people feel like they HAVE to buy an entirely optional hat?
I want ep3 to have an open multiplayer component that replaces what CS:S is to me right now.
