Illinois School Prayer: Moment Of Silence Could Be Back Soon
82 replies, posted
The only reason why people want this in is so the religious will feel like they still have some power over people.
The only time we ever had moments of silence in school was after 9/11, and I'm in Canada. We did it every day at 9AM for like 2 months. Never really thought of it as a big deal to have a moment of silence in respect. Not much of a big deal to have one for religion, either
It's a moment of silence. It doesn't matter.
However, if it was a moment of christian silence... or any other religious moment, then it'd be fucked.

A moment of SILENCE, I KILL YOU!?
I don't see how a moment of silence is inherently religious but participation definitely should not be mandatory. If a student doesn't want to partake they should be permitted to leave the room until it's over.
[editline]16th January 2011[/editline]
I can also see some First Amendment problems associated with this being mandatory.
Does that mean when I'm told to be quiet during a school assembly, I should be allowed to speak anyway? A minute of silence can mean anything, hence it can be simply a part of school life. I don't see why students should need to leave the room for this, any more then they should need to leave the room during a last-minute game of silent-ball (primary school example I know, but you get what I mean).
My school had a moment of silence right before the pledge of allegiance, I thought it was just something to help people focus or something, we were never told that it was supposed to be for prayer.
Personally I'm fine with this law as long as it's just a moment of silence, the article itself said that the law didn't say anything specific about the students having to pray.
I'm an Atheist and I still think we should just have the moment of silence, it's respectful.
Pretty much this, the reason the whole Moment of Silence started was to be respectful for all those who were killed in the attacks during 9/11.
I dont know whats so "horrible" about respecting fellow countrymen after a tragedy.
The last time we had a silent minute in school was when the huge tsunami that killed a lot of Swedish people in Thailand. But we were allowed to leave if we wanted since it was in the end of class. So everyone left and didn't give a fuck except the spoiled brat kids that wanted to please their teacher.
I am excited about this. I wish more schools had this. How about instead of catering to the needs of the non-religious, we give the religious kids a moment in school so they can pray. I can't even find time in the day. what am I to do? pray while running to my next class? pray while unlocking my locker? I like this.
In the morning before you go to school..?
At my school we didn't have a moment of silence and we didn't say the pledge.
Which is fine, because I don't pray or say the pledge anyways.

Or perhaps during the Moment of Silence? Why is it such a big deal? If you don't wanna pray, don't pray. If you don't wanna reflect on something don't. But don't be disrespectful of others beliefs and shit on them because you are offended they might be practicing their religion in your general vicinity. Is their prayer interfering with your daily routines of school life? Is it detracting from your education? Is it somehow creating a negative school environment? Because if it isn't, what's the problem then? If you can provide me with legitimate proof it somehow detracts from your educational ability, beyond the offense you take to it personally, then I will concede.
Long post that is so ridiculous I'm not %100 sure is sarcastic or not
If you're serious, way to belittle someone based solely on their beliefs. You don't have to accept them, but you shouldn't shun them for harmless beliefs. You're no better than the people you purportedly despise.
Oh, and by the way I'm atheist in case anyone wanted to dispute my beliefs.
Just because it says Prayer in the title doesn't you have to pray. It's not just for religious people. You can sit there and think about boning your girl while the guy next to you prays.

setting aside time in school that's specifically for prayer is unconstitutional, which is why the "if you don't want to pray then don't pray" argument holds no water.
and when i responded to sun's post he was making it seem like he had this wicked tight schedule where had no time at all to pray, and i just mentioned he probably had time before school at his house.

The problem is that the government is saying "if you're an atheist, sit tight and let these other people pray and we'll start class in a few minutes". They're favoring religions who pray over religions who don't (atheism). It'd be like if the school handed out mats and took out 5 minutes a day for Muslims to pray facing Mecca. Its cool with me if Muslims pray during school, the school just shouldn't be involved in it or taking out time during the day for it.
Yes, atheism is treated as a religion with regard to the law.

but it's not specifically for prayer
thus "silent reflection"
By the way, teacher led prayer is totally illegal.
but it's not specifically for prayer

As I've said before everyone knows it's "silent reflection *wink wink*"
They can call it whatever they want, but everybody knows it's main purpose is for prayer.
[editline]17th January 2011[/editline]
"Silent reflection" has no purpose at all. What purpose could it possibly have other than for prayer?
When this law was first passed, I just kinda sat there for a minute and wondered what the fuck I was supposed to be reflecting about. It was dumb as hell.
Back when I was in high school we had a moment of silence every single morning. Nowhere, at any time, did anyone mention ANYTHING about it being prayer. It was simply a moment of silence.
I don't know why atheists suddenly decided it was forced prayer. That's fucking stupid.

Don't know where you live, but at my school in Illinois everybody complained about it every morning. I don't even think they were atheists, and they thought it was stupid as hell too.
Illinois has typically been a very Democratic state as well; Chicago especially.
[editline]17th January 2011[/editline]
Maybe if you've been doing moments of silence since Kindergarten people may not find it stupid. But at the time this law was first passed I was a Junior in high school. The kids my age hadn't ever had to do it before.
I don't see how a moment of silence for absolutely nothing makes it better than one for prayer.
No problem with a moment of silence. I do have a problem with it if its directed at a specific God or Goddess. A moment of silence should not be directed towards prayer but merely doing what it says - being silent for a minuet.
Since you don't have to pray in the minute of silence... Then you can just stay quiet for a minute and do homework, and have respect for the people who uses that silence.
