I have been very fond of Matrix, matrix is not a program but a standard protocol, it's similar in concept to email, anyone can host a server and anyone can be registered in a specific server, just like I can send emails to people @gmail.com from @hotmail.com using thunderbird matrix allows people from at matrix.org to communicate with people at example.com using any client they want. It's cool and it allows many ways of doing things, you can run a discord/like client called riot that allows video calls and voice calls. http://matrix.org/

A lot of websites look very similar today. Mostly because looking unique is less important than being functional and familiar to users.
[...] turns out screensharing is part of the modern web, which is interesting [t]https://jii.moe/NykdRsSEz.png[/t]
Web APIs have gotten extremely versatile lately. The WebRTC protocol is essentially a full implementation of SCTP (great for gaming too) with some extras, for example. The only downside is that there's a pretty severe lack of libraries for endpoints in other languages. There's usually a C++ one, but that's about it as far as the newer communication features go.
Always reminding you [t]https://jii.moe/41KXhN8VM.png[/t]
if there's one feature I desperately want, it's server-specific avatars to go with nicknames. Anytime I change my av for a good joke with one group of friends I get ten messages and @mentions from people across other servers (a server ended up making a custom tag for me so they could @mention accordingly)
is the stand alone client web based???
yes and it really shows if you don't have a supercomputer in a fast paced channel my god the performance is AWFUL
i'll give them $5 if it spares me from their cringeworthy millennial/gamer-oriented "humor"
I know people who refuse to use Discord based on this alone. "Yeah it's more stable and reliable than Steam for group chat, yeah you get much better voice chat, yeah you get custom emotes and reactions and channels and tons of other useful features, but every time I load the client or see a changelog I have to look at a stupid joke for, like, a few moments tops so that ruins the entire thing for me." Like holy shit get over yourself.
discord still doesn't have colored text irc > discord
I've used Discord and Teamspeak and I choose teampseak not only because I think it has superior sound quality but because the permissions system is just so advanced and nothing can even compare to it at the moment.

The only thing that is handy about Discord is that it is all web based, no installs, and it "just works" (sometimes, not always). But then, almost everyone I know that uses Discord uses the client and not the web version, so I don't get why they would choose it over TS. I will say that the Discord API is pretty neat and I could do some cool things with it. While TS3's auth system is so fucking stupid for what it's use is.

Consider this, teamspeak is written in c++ If you compile this onto wasm, you can then run it in a browser It's not as simple as it sounds, but it's not ruled out completely (Wasm is Web assembly, we can run assembly within browsers now... Eventually, it's faster than JavaScript) [editline]24th December 2016[/editline]
is the stand alone client web based???
I've mentioned this, but they use react.js for their UI, and it's all bundled into one big webpack. It's built with electron.js, so they get a working web client ad well as a downloaded version running off chromium, which is modified so they have better access(running application scanning, unfocused keyboard shortcuts). If it makes you feel better, Slack do this too. But it means you're using a whole other chromium process for one site. So I just use it from waferfox
Don't you need to rent TS3 servers to use it?
You can host one on your home connection, it's a downloadable server software
You can host one on your home connection, it's a downloadable server software
Not as reliable as an offsite server. This is why Discord is so popular: not everybody can be bothered to set up their own hosting solution. I'm frankly confused as to why this never comes into discussions of Discord vs TS/Mumble, etc. Discord being free and just working without having to purchase and/or setup a dedicated 24/7 uptime machine locally or renting a server is a huge feather in its cap. Likewise, not having complete control over the server could be an important consideration for the privacy-minded.
We run it at our 350 patron LAN, everyone get <1MS ping, and everyone not using it gets ass fucked by the internet speed since 350 people online [editline]24th December 2016[/editline]
Not as reliable as an offsite server.
More reliable than a discord server [t]https://jii.moe/41fo_9U4f.png[/t] :godzing:
Biggest problem is that I recall being in that clever bot chat with some devs from H&C and they said they'd never have a monthly subscription thing, and would sell themes and sticker packs instead. They even made jokes about [You need discord gold to view this image] Kinda dumb for them to say that then turn back on their word.

Saying one program is better than another is useless unless you consider what people expect from the program. If someone just wants a program to get a bit more connected to their community Discord does exactly that. If someone intends on hosting a server purely for voip and prides latency + quality, Teamspeak has that. All these programs have their advantages and disadvantages. People will just say TS3 or Discord is better and not acknowledge why different people might like the other systems.
Murmur/Mumble is the king of quality+latency, only thing TS3 has better is platform maturity. Also Mumble is free and open, so that's nice for 50+ groups of people.
