• Deep freeze settles in Chicago, record low at O'Hare

You know, the actual temperature isn't bad. It's currently -21F where I'm at in Minnesota, but that fucking wind steals any heat away. My eye actually froze shut a few days ago, first time I've ever had that happen. This isn't the coldest winter I've endured, but it's pretty cold.
I feel sorry for my mom because she's going to chicago on the 20th for a work conference. We live in Southern California so I don't expect she'll enjoy the cold.
35°F right now in South Florida. \his is the lowest I've seen since I lived here.
All the hot water pipes in my house froze over, now I'm stuck with freezing cold water. woo
As much as I'd like it to snow down here, I can't say that I'd like the entire state to freeze. I mean, there IS a reason why there are so many farmers here. If the crops freeze and die, prices will go up SUPER high and make everything worse.
not to mention driving on ice-y roads is fucking hard, every driver in Florida is already a huge fucking idiot and there would be so many accidents it'd be terrifying tbh were lucky in Florida with the weather around this time of year, everyone freezes to death in all other states and were like "Fuck, guess i have to put on a jacket or two today!"

Not a single drop of snow in Helsinki, Finland this winter. We'll see if there'll be any in the coming weeks, but I doubt it. Pretty weird shit. The couple of last winters were rich in snow, and so were most of the winters in my life here, but not anymore..
Now all we need is the Gulf stream to stop working(like it's predicted) and half of europe will be like that even during summer,forever...
Got up this morning to find this. The RealFeel™ is the windchill, and even though it was predicted actually seeing and feeling -44C is not fun at all. Go figure.
I am from Chicago and lemme tell you. You can feel the cold on the walls.
these are from yesterday morning, things have gotten way worse through yesterday bedroom windows all have thick ice build up, sun and interior heater helps thin it out but it's still thick at the mullions [t]http://i.imgur.com/1ZvrMYS.png[/t] the melting water was literally pouring off of my window sill, have to change out towels every few hours to keep up with it front door is completely frosted over like this around the edges, as are all the openable windows and the sliding glass door in the kitchen. Half of the windows and the bottom half of the glass door are entirely covered in frost (not pictured) [t]http://i.imgur.com/c0xA9AZ.png[/t] (didn't realize quality was crap sorry) portal window next to front door is now about twice as built up [t]http://i.imgur.com/OpZbtwc.png[/t][t]http://i.imgur.com/ZHCXXE2.png[/t] it was 40 degrees downstairs from the draft coming in from the ice. To stop the wofting cold air coming in (through the underside of the front door, the vent and closet next to the front door, and the sliding glass door in the kitchen), we dug out a bunch of old comforter blankets and stuffed them against the cracks. This helped a lot, but the blankets froze to the windows with the condensation almost instantly so nobody's using any doors for a while. Garage is still openable. people have had worse weather, yeah, but this place isn't built for it. The neighborhood association refuses to fix a lot of the clearly faulty sealing on the windows and insulation on a wall or two (the walls are sweating as much as my bedroom windows, and the front closet by the door has zero insulation on two exterior walls, so it's pouring cold air in), so me and my roommate are probably fronting that ourselves once spring comes around [editline]7th January 2014[/editline]
A bad time to have my bed up against the outer wall of the building. I'm sleeping on the floor from now on.
my bedroom floor is so cold that it feels 'wet', my bed's backed into an exterior corner but it's way better than a floor over the garage (which we already upgraded with insulation after last winter)
Christ that really sucks Dai. Worst we have are chilly floors and walls and windows, and we keep some water running so as not to freeze the pipes.
this just in, 4 confirmed deaths from shoveling driveways today/yesterday, 1 more in critical condition I wow
Feels GREAT I just like to go out in flip flops and shorts
this just in, 4 confirmed deaths from shoveling driveways today/yesterday, 1 more in critical condition I wow
As sad as this is, it's fairly common. It's really easy to over exert yourself in freezing temperatures and give yourself a heart attack. Happened to my grandma a few years back. Also I'm having a hard ass time keeping my place warm. Had the heater on 80 for the past 3 days and it's only peaked at around 70. Luckily my loft collects all the warmth but anytime I go downstairs for a drink it's like walkin in a meat locker.

All the heat chugs into the bedrooms/bathrooms upstairs and leaves you sweating, all the while it's still mid 60's and still pumping because it doesn't think it's warm enough
Central IL, reporting in. It's really fucking cold.
the hell kind of email is that I hate buzzwords in the first place but at least try and make sense with them [editline]e[/editline] also the temperature has officially broken above zero, but this was kind of poorly placed article in question
This whole season's fucked. Apparently this weekend Winnipeg is getting (briefly) into the positives. In January. What the fuck.

??? Chicago + Siberia = Chiberia It's kind of clever.
??? Chicago + Siberia = Chiberia It's kind of clever.
I'd love to post some off joke about that, but my family is hungry and I need to go and hunt us some Moose.

ah yes, "Big Willie"
All the hot water pipes in my house froze over, now I'm stuck with freezing cold water. woo
First off, inspect the pipes (I assume they are copper, I hope for your sake they're copper) to see if there's any bursts. You'll know when you see one, the pipe will have a small crack with (usually) very white ice that's frothed out of it. If there's no bursts, apply some gentle heat to the pipe at first, with the tap fully open. Once your pipes heat up enough so the ice can move, they'll rattle very loudly. You want this. Keep heating until you get a trickle of water from the faucet, and then the real fun begins. Wrap your pipes in some type of cloth near the danger spots, and tape it with duct tape. Cloth should be an inch thick, and you should extend this two feet past the cold spot to prevent further freezing.
<pictures and words about draft problems>
I don't know why you weren't ever taught these crucial skills, but don't worry, I'm here to help so you won't freeze to death! :D First off, put some plastic over those windows, be sure to stretch it tight and seal it well. You might want to get rid of the frost first, so you don't have shitty aquariums for windows. You might want to remove the blankets, carefully (please don't break your windows) so they're not trapped between the plastic and the window and also full of moisture. Next part is the door. Identify the source of the draft, if it's coming between the door and the frame then you can get by with layers of tape if you can't find weather strip that's thin enough. However, if it's coming through between the frame and stud, leaking past the molding, then you've got a bigger problem. You can quick-fix that with some masking or painter's tape (dry surface, make it dry as you can get) and make sure it's on there pretty well. You're more than likely aware of Chicago's reputation for wind, so I don't need to explain how tight things have to be. Thirdly, regarding the lack of insulation in the walls, you're kinda fucked if you don't tear open the wall and pack it full of fiberglass. You could be a lazy fuck and invest in a few cans of that spray foam insulation, but if you ever move out and anyone has to fix anything dealing with the wall they're going to probably want you dead. However, a wall without insulation is a wall with an air pocket, and we can use that. On the outside, depending on your siding, (do not ever do this with vinyl siding) you can tape some more! Be mindful that moisture will ruin the adhesive on masking or painter's tape, so you'll want something that resists moisture. All we're trying to do is stop the airflow, we don't want hot air to leak out and cold air to leak in. I don't know what the situation is where you live, but you mentioned "Housing Association" and I don't know what degree of repairs you can do, if any at all. That's why I offered up the easy to remove, or ghetto-fabulous (tape, tape everywhere) methods so you can do something rather than nothing. I'd definitely see to the windows first off, they're a source of a lot of lost heat for many homes. Anyone got any more problems? I've lived in rural Minnesota all my life, I've got the experience. :l
thanks for the tips, I'll probably need a hairdryer and a few hours to remove the blankets from the walls/doors first, heh. The actual 'draft' was cold air pumping out under the door/through the vent of the poorly insulated closet, mixed with normal cold air pouring off cold surfaces like the front door and all the windows. does normal old cellophane work well enough? it seems to just be pure buildup of condensation at the door because it's metal and conducts temp pretty well. also we have a cat and I'm 99% sure he'd just tear up the plastic, it's his thing Second, 'windy city' is considered a half truth, it was more about big-winded politicians back in the day but in the center of all the skyscrapers you get some pretty concentrated airflow. Everywhere else it's just lake-effect weather third, the unit is owned by my roommate's parents, but the building itself is maintained by the association (it's a big townhouse in a subdivision of similar units). The place was left alone a few winters ago and all the pipes burst and wrecked up the place apparently, so they bought the unit to fix and flip. Decided to rent it to us for base cost til we move out, then they can get their flip profit. Still, there's some form of contract for maintenance and I think they're just being stingy. Hopefully a few pictures will get their attention, too bad my roommate stuffed up all the blankets before I got my good camera out
A good plane shot of Frozen Chicago.

important update: Went to taco bell drive through, girl's arm would put off steam when she handed things out the window
