• Wikileaks: US plan to defend Baltics from Russia revealed
The US and Nato have drawn up plans to defend the Baltic nations against Russia, latest US diplomatic cables disclosed by Wikileaks show. The cables, published in the Guardian newspaper, reveal plans to deploy nine Nato divisions to defend the region. Wikileaks' decision to release hundreds of US diplomatic cables has angered Washington and other governments. Meanwhile, a warrant for the arrest of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has reached UK authorities. The Swiss post office's bank, PostFinance, has frozen his accounts. The latest leaked documents show that in January this year, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton apparently signed a confidential cable saying allies in Nato had agreed to expand the contingency plan to defend Poland, to include the Baltic States - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The nine Nato divisions involved would be American, British, German and Polish. The cables say the military plans should not be discussed publicly as it might lead to an unnecessary increase in Nato-Russia tensions. BBC World Affairs correspondent Peter Biles says the documents should be seen against the background of Washington's efforts to "reset" its relations with Russia and improve co-operation. This isn't a planned invasion or provocation, but a last ditch defense plan if Russia invades the Baltic States. I don't think anyone sensible in the Russian or collected NATO governments will be too shaken up by this, although NATO commanders might be a bit pissed off. I still don't see the benefit of leaking it, but I don't think harm will come from it.
Gee thanks wikileaks. I'm feel safe at night knowing that people who don't like us know how we plan to stop them if they attack.
Assange is actually quite the dirt bag, incredibly childish also.
Gee thanks wikileaks. I'm feel safe at night knowing that people who don't like us know how we plan to stop them if they attack.
To be fair, if they didn't like us, we were probably a target for them anyway.
Gee thanks wikileaks. I'm feel safe at night knowing that people who don't like us know how we plan to stop them if they attack.
Russia is an ally of the US genius
This is some interesting stuff. More info is needed.
Russia is an ally of the US genius
They're not exactly on the best of terms
I guess this is the downside to Wikileak's system: they indiscriminately release the information, only filtering info that could endanger people's lives. I think it's good that info like Hilary ordering the UN to be infiltrated gets relieved to the public, but info like this just generates unnecessary tension. However even further filtering the information defeats the point of Wikileaks. The only real solution is for NATO and Russia to stop being so tense all the fucking time :v:
Russia is an ally of the US genius
if you think they'll be allies forever you're very dimwitted.
if you think they'll be allies forever you're very dimwitted.
There's no growing hostility right now.
There's no growing hostility right now.
Not yet but if the USA keeps getting involved in business that does not concern it then there will be.
I'm liking how they are releasing leaks now. We get good reports on every document.
Not yet but if the USA keeps getting involved in business that does not concern it then there will be.
They've been doing that for years, all that ever led to was War Via Proxy.
take the bad with the good people
NATO and Russia are like little kids. When NATO pushes Russia then all hell breaks loose. Then days later they are friends again. [editline]6th December 2010[/editline] I hope America doesn't get attacked.
Assange is actually quite the dirt bag, incredibly childish also.
Agreed. I understand releasing information about corruption and illegal actives. But this isn't anything related, hell it isn't even important for us to know. They're really crossing some lines here....
Everyone has plans to defend themselves from someone else. like i have plans to defend myself from the inevitable dog rape to come to my neighborhood
There's no growing hostility right now.
Not at the moment no, but if something turns up tensions may increase between the two states. Although they aren't mortal enemies any more doesn't mean they're best of friends.
This Wikileaks stuff would be soooo much better if even just ONE cable had plans for what to do if extraterrestrials attacked Earth. Imagine if, as a joke, a US diplomat had sent an email to someone saying "Russia and China have unofficially agreed to ally with the US and bomb the fuck out of ET if he shows his ass around here(Earth)."
This actually isn't unusual. The US (and most other countries, I imagine) has plans for EVERYTHING. The US Army seriously has a plan for "the Girl Scouts start an armed rebellion" and "zombie invasion". The reason is that the best way to train military planners is to have them make plans. And, since they already made them, what's the hurt in filing it away, just in case. And planning for "Russia invading the Baltic states" isn't that illogical - the USSR did so in the late 30s, and Putin/Medvedev have been acting somewhat similarly to the Soviets with regard to foreign policy.
Now that's not cool.
Russia is an ally of the US genius
Now THAT'S debatable. Sure, it's not a Cold War right now, but the US and Russia are not allies militarily. Hell, we argue all the time about it - the Russians objected heavily to the Western Europe missile shield, we objected to their actions in Ossetia and Georgia, etc.
Best leak so far. :unsmith:
There's no growing hostility right now.
Well it's not going to improve if there are secret mistrusts like this, which is why this leak is good. Now leak some from the other side so we can have a good group therapy on open terms. :P
Hey, publicly release defense plans, great. So many of these cables are so pointless. I'm sure Russia has the same from us, and I have no problem of that. Watch your enemies close, but your friends closer, etc
Ok, releasing the stuff about prisoner torture and war crimes by the U.S. makes sense. But why this?

Maybe I was wrong. Maybe WikiLeaks isn't that positive.
