Nope, I'm a supporter of controlled whaling.
Commercial whaling was banned for member countries of the IWC in 1986, except for the exploitable loophole of research whaling. They are thinking of re-opening Commercial whaling because japan is throwing a hissy fit because Australia won't let them illegally operate in their Whale Sanctuary.

It just bothers me to see giant floating slaughterhouses going around butchering whales like they are cattle for "research".
That's the thing that bothers me.
I don't think the word research should be mentioned here, it's clearly not research, so it's not even worthwhile dignifying it as an excuse.
Fuck you Dolphin and Whale!

Indeed. IWC knows it damn well too. You're not fooling anyone Japan. You don't need to kill hundreds of whale a year, for 5+ years, in the same region, to study whale migration and eating habits. I predict major whaling legislation in the near future, even the US is getting into the fight with Australia and Japan, and the rest of the IWC member counties.
I'm not about to go vegan.
Animals eat other animals. It's a natural thing. To kill an animal for fun, on the other hand, I find disgusting, but so long as the hunter plans to fully use and/or eat his prey, I see no issue.
Was it Kant that said all rational beings have worth? If Dolphins are cognitive rational beings, they're not much different from humans, in terms of what we think is worth giving humans rights for.
Dolphins should have human rights.
They think and feel after all.
"Human Rights" is just a lousy direction to bring this in. I think they should just be given status as sort "Elevated Lifeforms" held in a sort of sacred regard, that gain amnesty from being commercially hunted. I think hunting of them should be allowed for recognized, small groups of people that require them as a source of food and living material.

I think this is a good idea.
Are you guys fucking shitting me
You want to give animals human fucking rights
You all are cracked.
I say we ship all the tree-huggers and eco-freaks to the north pole with all thier dolphins and whales and stuff like that and let them live on thier own...and then nuke them.
yeah, you just go over to the north pole and get it ready for us
well be right after you, i promise
wait what? Not even being able to keep them in captivity? We keep Chimpanzees and Elephants in captivity, how are dolphins and whales smarter?

Well, why not?
If they're sentient, have emotions, feel pain, and understand the concept of consciousness, why not?

Uh, dude, you're also an animal.
That's not a very good argument.
This vote is pretty close
I always wondered, if an alien race far more intelligent than us came to earth, would they be equally as justified in killing and eating us as we are in killing and eating life forms that are equally unintelligent to us us as we are to the aliens?
This vote is pretty close
Well no, it's about one to two.
What, who came up with this? Do they also get a right to vote?
I'd eat dolphins/whales every day if I could.

uhm, you do know humans are the only creatures so far proven to have the concept of consciousness, not even chimpanzees have that, hell there are a lot of humans who don't have that.
Dolphins and whales aren't humans, fuck them, we can do whatever we like to them as the planet's most advanced species we have the right to.

Alright so do we give every animal rights or what? If they are really close in DNA, do they get rights as well? If the animal is "really smart" by animal terms do they then get rights?
You know what I mean when I say Animal. We use tools, do math, build structures, speak structured languages, etc. This is what sets us apart from the other animals. But if you want to be all technical then well I guess you got me there.
Not to mention what about the cultures that depend on Whaling? Do you just brush them aside and say "No Whales have rights now." What if Hindu people believed that Cows should have the right to not be eaten because they think cows feel pain and have some form of sentience. Do we abandon a major food source?
They're intelligent and they don't murder us
Why murder them :(

"Concept of Consciousness" is a fallacious term.
No living creature has a concept of consciousness, It's merely an illusion caused by a bloated cognitive abilities :ssh:
The only way you can have a real "Concept of Conscious" is if you were mentally coterminous with everything in the universe, and perceived your own conception IE; Omnipotence. But if you want to pull some more pseudo philosophical bullshit, you can do it away from an argument as morally clear as this one.

I'm sure cultures like the Inuit and whathaveyou that depend on it would still be allowed to do it. The Japanese, however, only do it because it's "tradition". They do not need it in any way shape or form. It's just a giant income source to them.

So Animals will have rights but not always
And who gives you the right to decide what a culture needs or not.

Why do you deserve rights? For all you know, the only reason that whales and dolphins haven't built structures, is because they don't have opposable thumbs. Just because they haven't built anything, doesn't make them any less worthy than you. In fact, since you probably don't have a lot to show for yourself, the large size of a whale, and the lower population of them probably makes it worth more than you by default.

You can't just give rights to an another specie. They won't even understand that they have rights anyway.
