No one knew if it was an explosive device or not. For all we knew, she could have just taped a cellphone and a box of pills around her neck and claimed it was an explosive.

Aha, do you have any idea of what the world is like outside of the US/western world? Plenty of 18 year old girls do strap explosive devices to themselves, and don't have access to college/Facebook/etc.

Anyhow, the fact that she is a rich white kid living in the western world hardly means that she cannot feel strongly enough about something to stage such a dramatic stunt, for whatever reason. Yes, most girls her age wouldn't, but that doesn't prove anything.
