Regular people (not gun-nuts) maybe understand "semi-automatic assault rifle" better than "semi-automatic high-capacity rifle chambered to an intermediate cartridge"
It is a semi automatic carbine.
Semi automatic rifle is acceptable as well.
But obviously this only refers to their semi automatic variants. Police may, on occasion, employ ones with fully automatic or burst fire modes. Then it becomes an assault rifles.
"assault" and "Semi-automatic" are both prefixes. Assault suggests it has a mode which has the ability to fire more than one round from a single trigger pull. Semi-automatic means it may only fire one round per trigger pull.
They are two completely different things, and getting it right is very rudimentary. Saying a semi automatic rifle is an assault rifle is flat out wrong and would be terrible news reporting.
