I really wish we, as a whole, were more open to depression and the fact that young kids can indeed suffer from it.
I think our current attitude makes children want to hide it, if they feel sad and that needs to change. Just because sadness isn't obvious doesn't mean that depression isn't there. We should be telling kids that it's okay to be sad.
I had a friend kill himself a few years back, in his note he said he 'wanted to be in heaven with his mother' who recently died of cancer. Heartbreak is a horrible thing...
too late to snip it you idiot. These dumb, unfunny, and tasteless puns should be a bannable offense.
Insensitive jokes have been bannable for the longest time IIRC.

How nice of you rinfect to pm me and ridicule my dead friend, so thoughtful.
seems like that picture in that story was a bit off, sounds like she had some sort of psychosis
I'm not religious so i'm not sure, but doesn't suicide send you to hell?
I'm not religious so i'm not sure, but doesn't suicide send you to hell?
Believing in heaven isn't the same as believing in god.
The girl was 12 and distraught so I don't think she knew or cared about what religion had to say about suicide.

also wow you guys love to go on and on about how if things are removed, something will take it's places (psychologically, i.e. religion being removed will be replaced with another form of religion).
but when it comes to this, its just unanimous that religion is evil le r/atheismface
Fills me with dread to hear this.
My father who was the best fucking man in the world passed away on the 12th of April 2012, from colon Cancer, two years of absolute fucking hell, I was even there as he passed away, I held his hand so tight during his last few breaths, it is one of the most burnt in memories that I cannot forgot. My sister was next to me and she was absolutely crushed by what happened. My dad did absolutely everything he could for me and her and he always spoilt her whenever he could. My dad without a doubt was the best Dad ever. I feel so bad for my sister because she's only 11 and just starting secondary school and at least I had a dad while till the age of 18. But this sort that this girl did something that I am trying my very hardest to keep under control, I always have time for my sister and I try my best to be as close as I can with her, so that no serious underlying problems like this occur. I'm not saying I am very good at it but for all the privileges I've had in my life I owe it to my Dad to make sure my sister doesn't do something like this.

What if I told you, that all groups tend toward a shared set of ideals?
It's closer to a hivemind than you think. Remember when all of a sudden, those "FP isn't a hivemind" posts went up a hundred fold for a few days, and then vanished overnight?
r/atheism went absolutely batshit over this.
On a non-idiotic note, though, this is really horrible and avoidable.
The idea of heaven of course contributed to this but blaming it completely is stupid. The kid clearly had problems dealing with that death and was desperate. The idea of heaven probably stops alot of suicides by giving people a reason to keep going.

Why are there 10 "funny" ratings?... That's sad
I'm not religious so i'm not sure, but doesn't suicide send you to hell?
Depends on the Christian you talk to, but yeah, it is taught in most churches that it is the greatest sin you can ever commit. But I, as a Christian, don't believe that is entirely true.

i actually browsed through the thread specifically to find this post
Religion wouldn't even be at fault anyways, it teaches that anyone who commits suicide will not get into heaven.
That isn't actually true much anymore.
Most religions are going away from that idea because now they realize that sucide is due to mental illnessess.

Since a good portion of what most churches were teaching 30 years ago (God is angry, fire and brimstone for you), I can see why.

Ur Mom's a bannable offense.
But seriously, shitty story. I guess the girl just had her mind set to it..part of me feels worse for the mom than the actual daughter.
Natural Selection
Any idea what the church is gonna say?
Isn't suicide considered a sin in their books? This is fucking terrible.
It's not a black and white thing, generally. Many religions and sects that acknowledge something in the scope of sin -- be it mistakes, wrongdoings, forbidden acts, depravity, et cetera -- believe that one must have the guilty mind along with the guilty act to have committed a sin.
This child probably didn't have sin in her heart, so I think a fair lot of people would say she didn't sin. Generally, people of unsound or undeveloped mind such as children, the insane, the feeble, et cetera are incapable of depravity because what's in their heart is completely separate from what's in their mind.
A good example of this would be violent religious extremists. A good portion of this lot is illiterate. They rely on figures to teach them how to live life properly with regards to their religion. Obviously, some folks might abuse this. We can see a lack of education and perhaps even intelligence -- that is that these, in many cases, may be very vulnerable people -- in a generalised religious extremist. There have been many cases of religious extremists trying to turn their own selves in for a bounty on their head.
These people, when they commit atrocities, have good in their heart. They believe that what they do brings them closer to God. Does their ignorance of their sin absolve them of it? Does it damage their relationship with God? Only God would know that, but I lean towards the view that these people are not guilty. Of course, society won't be so kind to them.

Actually it is true. It's called culture.

No, the Catholic church is the only major denomination that has suicide being an unforgivable sin.
Natural Selection
With that logic applied to this situation, it makes one wonder why you're still here
No, the Catholic church is the only major denomination that has suicide being an unforgivable sin.
The Catholic church has practically taken suicide away as a mortal sin.
They say that if someone isn't in full control of their faculties than they aren't really committing a sin
Oh lord I'm sad now.
My mum died when I was at the young age of about 6 from breast cancer. Proper destroyed me mentally. It's probably where most of my mental issues spawned from. Now I've been diagnosed with ASD and shit. I bet that would never have happened if my mum was still alive. :(
At least I have a really nice step-mom and a cute dog, and still have my dad.
I can only feel her pain. I used to pray every night for god to bring back my mum, even just for a day. Never happened so now I don't believe in religion at all. Sounds a bit extreme, I know, but to me it makes sense.
Poor girl.
God.....
It's times like these when I don't even feel like debating/arguing elsewhere. I wish FacePunch had a an emoticon for "Sad" or Tears. Stuff like this just isn't right. Especially when I think of so many people who would deserve it more.
I just hope her loved ones fare better. Especially since this sort of thing can cause chain reactions....
Particularly when they are impressionable, and every man and their dog comforts them by saying that their loved one is in heaven, and they will meet them again one day.
That mentality can spiral downwards pretty fast if the wrong state of mind takes over.
Which goes back to what I said in the OP: this was avoidable.
What else are you supposed to tell kids? "They're gone forever, you won't ever see them again"?
