Schoolgirl found hanged after saying she 'wanted to be with daddy in heaven'.

There are literally billions of people alive today who believe in an afterlife but haven't killed themselves to get there, blaming religion for this is asinine and I'm actually surprised that anyone would stoop that low (although I clearly shouldn't have been)
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh, that's really fucking horrible..
Am I the only one who thinks that saying the about the bedtime story makes it even more sad and depressing?

Any chance they have to blame religion in a tragedy, they will.
I find the best argument against somebody who wants to 'be with somebody again' in heaven, or the afterlife, or whatever they think happens next, is that life after death is always told to be eternal. As such, if there is a heaven then when you do pass on you'll be with them forever. As such, there's no reason to waste away this one life which you definitely do have, when you'll be with them for all eternity after you leave this world of whatever non-self-inflicted cause. That's how I've had to explain it to my boyfriend, who recently lost a close friend. He's heartbroken by it, but I just tell him that it's important to celebrate the times you did have, and move on, because otherwise you'll drive yourself mad.

I don't believe in an afterlife myself, but to me it's something I'm going to find out about when I do pass on anyway.

Whatever our other differences, I agree with the logic. And I'm sorry for the hardship you two have gone through.
Life is too precious.
Fills me with dread to hear this.
My father who was the best fucking man in the world passed away on the 12th of April 2012, from colon Cancer, two years of absolute fucking hell, I was even there as he passed away, I held his hand so tight during his last few breaths, it is one of the most burnt in memories that I cannot forgot. My sister was next to me and she was absolutely crushed by what happened. My dad did absolutely everything he could for me and her and he always spoilt her whenever he could. My dad without a doubt was the best Dad ever. I feel so bad for my sister because she's only 11 and just starting secondary school and at least I had a dad while till the age of 18. But this sort that this girl did something that I am trying my very hardest to keep under control, I always have time for my sister and I try my best to be as close as I can with her, so that no serious underlying problems like this occur. I'm not saying I am very good at it but for all the privileges I've had in my life I owe it to my Dad to make sure my sister doesn't do something like this.
Good man.
Yes
Wonderful.
And you know this how?
It's better to celebrate the life someone lived and had than it is to delude yourself that they somehow didn't really die and are still living in a different dimension or something.
But here's the lovely little thing:
How do you know it is a delusion?
I'm not getting in a religious debate, they're pointless.
Fair enough; I can understand even though I'm no sure I'd be that harsh. But my point was that we sadly do not have any definitive proof one way or another about life after death or lack thereof. Even if we might believe otherwise. I'm normally a big a fan of the harsh truth as you can imagine, but it's hard to know much about an evidenciary nullity.
For what it's worth, I do figure we should be blunt and tell people that it's very possible there is nothing after. But I can't rule it out.
It's better to celebrate life than to mourn over death. (Although mourning is completely A-Okay)
I agree with you there.
Interestingly enough, Paul, himself, addresses this issue in the Bible:
"For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which to choose. 23 But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better; 24 yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sake." - Philippians 1:21-24
Paul agrees that he would rather die, but that he has a purpose on the Earth as it relates to other people. So his final choice is to live out his life doing the work of Christ.

No. I'm gonna go with a different approach. This has nothing to do with the fact that it's Facepunch.
A comedian tackled this and I can't find the video but it went something like this:
Soldiers dying in a war is a tragedy.
But MAYBE....JUST MAYBE...It's NOT so strange to go into enemy territory fully equipped and get shot.
Also, 12 year old kids like to think they're not dying any time soon and that this isn't going to happen to them.

One death is a tragedy, a billion is a statistic?
On another note, I'm not blaming religion, just the preconceived notion that there is an afterlife and that we must teach our children that preconception.
I'm not religious so i'm not sure, but doesn't suicide send you to hell?
Not all religions believe in heaven and hell, but as far as I know most religions say that one shouldn't commit suicide (Some have certain exceptions about suicide).
Oh lord I'm sad now.
My mum died when I was at the young age of about 6 from breast cancer. Proper destroyed me mentally. It's probably where most of my mental issues spawned from. Now I've been diagnosed with ASD and shit. I bet that would never have happened if my mum was still alive. :(
At least I have a really nice step-mom and a cute dog, and still have my dad.
I can only feel her pain. I used to pray every night for god to bring back my mum, even just for a day. Never happened so now I don't believe in religion at all. Sounds a bit extreme, I know, but to me it makes sense.
Poor girl.
Hang in there man!

Get out
On another note, I'm not blaming religion, just the preconceived notion that there is an afterlife and that we must teach our children that preconception.
I can understand how someone would want to comfort someone with this but I think its somewhat confusing what it actually means, does it mean "death is no biggie, because everything is fun in heaven so you can top yourself now and be with your passed relatives" or does it mean "You will be together again, don't spend your hole life worrying and being sad, be happy, that's what your loved ones would want".
So I can understand why it would be a problem when these things happen, just think of the mother.
she wanted to be with her dad in heaven.
But heaven doesn't exist, little girl. #euphoria #fedora
Doesn't the bible say that suicide is a sin punished by eternity in hell?
So... I don't follow the logic in suicide to see family in heaven...
This is why I think that teaching about life after death is a dumb idea, it leads to heart breaking situations like this where a young impressional youth kills themselves because they think that it will bring their parent back or allow them to see them again. It won't, that's just a story we tell ourselves because we fear death.
No, it isn't. You can't make that call, unless you've actually died and come back to tell us this. So, unless you're gonna offer something useful to the conversation rather than blaming religion and condescending to peoples' beliefs (which you obviously don't know jack shit about), get out.
Nobody should care what r/atheism does/thinks
Funny, because a shitload of people on here end up doing exactly what r/atheism does:
Flip shit, blame religion, never shut up about how we should "stop teaching children fairy tales about afterlife 'cause they'll kill themselves". Typical hypocrisy.
It's better to celebrate the life someone lived and had than it is to delude yourself that they somehow didn't really die and are still living in a different dimension or something.
So, you just want to crush their hopes of seeing their loved ones again, even though you don't even know for a fact that they're gone forever?
I bet you're pretty fun at parties.

For all we know she is with her father and the Lord in heaven god bless this Child's soul and give her mother the strength to avoid cynicism amidst this tragic loss.
God bless.

If a 12 year old needed a bedtime story, the loss of her dad must have really, really affected her.

Although, I can totally see how you might've thought I was making a bad pun.
Only a fool would presume to know anything of which everything is inherently unknown.
Only a fool would presume to know anything of which everything is inherently unknown.
Quoted for Truth.
I've said this a dozen times before: thinking heaven exists is not logical at all, so don't pull out that "well you can't prove it DOESN'T exist!" bullshit, because all that is, is wishful thinking.
And I don't talk about religion at parties, what sort of shit party is that?
All I'm gonna say about religion, because you can't argue about something illogical.
Unless you have actually died and seen for yourself that it doesn't, then the idea that there is nothing after death is just as illogical as believing in heaven. Really, something like this is beyond our abilities to even guess at, let alone make a definitive statement about.
It's simply not true and never has been.
People do act in ways similar to a hivemind. It isn't as obvious as with something like a bee's nest, but it's pretty fucking obvious.
Take something like a moshpit for example. They spontaneously happen with little or no verbal communication happening. It isn't exactly the same, but the underlying principle is intact.
Doesn't the bible say people who kill themselves go to hell too?
I mean I'm not a christian so I don't believe any of that shit but still my god
