the website has millions of users and tens of thousands of subreddits
the only way anyone knows about the subreddits is by word of mouth or by pressing the random button
most people (read: 99.99% of the users) wouldn't know about the subreddits until now
the admins don't actively browse every subreddit in existance. in fact, they barely post at all.
The only way anyone could have known about/done anything about this before is if somebody stumbled upon it and brought it to everyone's attention (see: exactly what happened now.)
This whole shitstorm is largely because somebody stumbled onto these child porn subreddits and made a post about it over the past day or two garnering all this attention.
A good comparison would be somebody finding an old defunct subforum on facepunch, and posting freely in it without anyone else knowing. Until anybody else finds it and tells everyone what's happening, it would fly under pretty much everyone's radar. We'll assume there's no ticker in this case because reddit doesn't have one.

Just because somebody is appointed as a moderator in a bunch of subreddits doesn't mean they're anything like an admin on the site

the admins know this shit happens and by not moderating the creation of subreddits they may as well be encouraging this bullshit
there's no way a well-adjusted human being would see that "/r/deadniggerjailbait" was made and not do something about it. the admins are completely to blame for this

I again defer you to the previous point made: there are hundreds of thousands of subreddits. There are only so many people that are admins on reddit, and they're all real, regular people working and living like everybody else.
I understand what you're getting at but at the same time, you aren't taking the size of the website and the small team of admins into account.

I think the idea behind it was probably more like having a semi-permanent irc chat room than a forum,where reddit just plays the role of the server host. It's a shame its got such a crappy community to be honest. The layout of the comment threads allows a thread to go off topic but not be derailed.
But on topic, I'll be glad to see them gone hopefully it'll make the community a bit better if all the pro 'free speech' people leave.
