• House cats kill more critters than thought

I live on the third floor of an apartment building, yet this one fat cat I used to have (died a little over a year ago) still managed to catch and kill a bird. His hunting skills belied his great bulk.
Mouses are probably good for the environment as a whole anyway.
And they're terrible for you. There's a valid reason why having mice is a MASSIVE health code violation for resteraunts. They aren't any cleaner because they're in your kitchen either. Oh, and if they're not spreading diseases they're chewing on the wires behind your wall. They have started house fires before.
I wonder how many people realise that they are meant to keep cats indoors for this reason. I am fairly sure (could be wrong) in Australia it is illegal to let cats out at night. They kill for fun.
You don't need cats to kill mice, just use rat bate/traps works just as well if not better. Everyone disagreeing with me because I said traps, fine just use bate it is better and dose not kill wildlife.
My 2 inside cats wont even kill a god damn spider. They just look at it and pat it around a bit then walk off. Why must I get the non-murderous cats?
You don't need cats to kill mice, just use rat bate/traps works just as well if not better.
Bullshit. We tried that. Doesn't work. End up spending a fortune on them and the only thing they catch is dust mites. With cats we haven't had to spend another cent on mouse control, seeing as the cats take care of the problem for us.

They ignore it entirely, eat the trap around the bait, take the bait without getting caught in the trap, and generally defeat the trap in every way it is possible to defeat the trap. We've tried everything from glue boards to spring traps to those stupid 'humane' traps that don't work because the mouse beats you back into the house. None of them worked. Cats > mousetraps.

Tapes can be noneffective, this is not.
Except the upkeep of the cat
Cost is SIGNIFICANTLY lower than traps and exterminators, and isn't really a concern since we'd have them as pets regardless.
and the other wildlife damage you do
fuck the wildlife. If it wants to come onto my property it's as good as fucked. Doesn't matter if the cats, the dog, my rifle, my RCs, my vehicles or my lawnmower find it. Besides, a few housecats are not going to upset the fragile ecosystem of the woods of Tennessee. More critters get ground into the roadways every day.
unless you keep your cat indoors.
Only the females. We don't need more fucking cats, and we can't afford to have them fixed at the moment. The boys are clipped, so they are both indoor and outdoor cats.
I hate it when people let their cats roam, they screw up the ground-nesting bird populations, I wouldn't mind plinking at a few of the bastards if they're attacking the nests on my property. I would never go lethal, but enough to teach them a lesson.

I love my cats and fuck the shit birds, It's awesome when my cat brings back a pidgeon at evenings while I laugh at the massacre. Tho, when he does not kill birds, wich Is rare, he just hunts roaches. Fuck those statistics, seriously.
ITT: Cat lovers don't want to admit they are doing damage to the environment because kittens are cute and no one knows what ratsak is.
I love my cats and fuck the shit birds, It's awesome when my cat brings back a pidgeon at evenings while I laugh at the massacre.
Well I'd laugh at a hawk when it picks up a kitten and shreds it in a tree.
Oh yea because animals know it is YOUR property
You'd think the drastic change in terrain, greenery, and the rather constant engine noises/chemical smells(We work on our own cars here, so there's plenty of oil stains 'n similar smells floating around the carport and driveway) would be a good clue to even the dumbest of wildlife that they probably shouldn't roam my land. For the most part it works, but some critters tempt fate, and those critters I have no sympathy for.
it is totally their own fault for people building houses where they used to live
Humans are higher up the food chain than possums. Tough fucking luck.
and then introducing spices that kill them.
Yeah, because common housecats never roamed my area before mankind brought his pets in. That totally didn't happen. Nevermind the fact that my cats are all strays that decided they needed a home that didn't involve starving to death more often than not starving.
You are loaning their land
No, no I am not. I own this land. It is my home, it is my rules. I'm higher up the food chain, simple as that.
and yes they do ruin ecosystems.
No, they don't. They especially don't ruin ecosystems THEY WERE ALREADY A PART OF! I don't live in some exotic cat-free zone or anything. I live somewhere that's had cats in it since cats existed. My pet cats are not going to unbalance the ecosystem they used to participate in. But even if they did I don't really give half a damn. They're fuzzy, they purr at me when I pet on them, they sleep on my bed, therefore I'll have a couple of them anyway.
They especially don't ruin ecosystems THEY WERE ALREADY A PART OF!
Wait, so you're saying house-cats existed in your environment before they were domesticated?
Wait, so you're saying house-cats existed in your environment before they were domesticated?
Yup. There's been cats roaming the Tennessee countryside for tens of thousands of years. That includes the ancestors of my pets. TN is not some sort of exotic, super-fragile rain forest that needs saving. It's just your standard run-of-the-mill woodland, full of the typical run-of-the-mill woodland critters. This includes cats.
I have one fat cat and one skinny one. The skinny one is a murderous one, she probably brings us around 50+ presents per year, when we count. There's probably so much more.

What does it matter where we are on a food chain, we have a capacity for thinking, we have an obligation to take care of those below us, not mindless killing because hurr durr it is my land. Not in the numbers we have now and not in the variety. Ok make bombs on your land and don't pay property tax, because it is yours. No you are loaning the land, it will not be yours forever, and what are you some sort of superior being, give up technology and out food chain a lion. You fail to grasp that cat populations are out of control in most areas and are not kept indoors. You also fail to grasp that cats can roam up to 10km from your house, not your property mate.
My cat has killed one tiny mouse in his life. He thought it was a toy :v:
and what are you some sort of superior being, give up technology and out food chain a lion.
You're forgetting that we're the superior being because of our intelligence. We're strong in mind and use tools to do the job. You can't just undo our tools and push us against physically stronger foes.
We got our first cat when I was 3. She's now 15 and still catches mice from time to time, but that's slowed down because she and our other (fatass) cat have pretty much killed everything. The original one, Rosie, used to catch snakes, kill them, and line them up next to my dad's bed. She also went after bats a lot.
I don't mind my cat killing stuff but I'm starting to get sick of it dragging its kills inside my house.
I have 5 cats and none of them do shit when a rodent or an insect appears.

we put a bell on the cat the cat managed to get it off all the time we did not bother
i can deal with my cats killing rats but it sorta pisses me off when they kill a little baby bird
I'd never put a bell on my cat, fucking birds everywhere and I'm glad he gets rid of them.
Fixed that for you. :v:
