They do stay in death row for a long time and the execution has to be properly prepared so the criminal would die from it (if you're alive after an execution attempt, you're free to go) . So yeah, it's just as expensive if they were going to prison.

The more worrying thing is how the police managed to find out. Did she physically mail the tape, and the police opened the package? Or did she email it, meaning they're monitoring private internet communications. Did she talk about it over the phone? Wiretap. How would they know she did this? Either way this case is disturbing, both the actual crime, and its implications. Yeah sorry to sound like a nutter, but I just realized they never said how they found out about this.

Unless you just want to line people up and shoot them, which is cheaper, but then we might as well throw out any pretense of a justice system.

Not just "people." I feel like your argument is based of the belief that shooting a man to death, and lethal injection, differ in how humane they are. Maybe they do, but whether you are the man holding the axe, or just the syringe, you are expected to treat the convict with respect to the end. I'll tell you what would be inhumane: Asking the man how he wants to be executed. As for it being just as expensive to stay on death row for 10+ years as it is to sit out a life sentence, that is certainly true. The length of stay should be, in my opinion, based on the controversy surrounding the case. If a man confesses, give him a trial like we would any man or woman, and if he is still found guilty, sentence him. If his crime is found heinous enough for the death penalty, then due to the lack of controversy, I feel he should be executed as soon as preparations are made. Other, less definitive, cases might warrant a longer wait period. I haven't done much research in the area, but possibly 5 years, or thereabouts, should be the limit for a wait on death-row. Out of time, have to make my 11:00 AM class. Comments, suggestions, etc are welcome.
