I'm thoroughly checking to see if any electronics I purchase in the future have any components manufactured by FoxConn, and I suggest you all do the same.
If it does, I'm not purchasing a product. That's how a consumer protests and shows their dissatisfaction.
It sucks because apparantley eVGA stuff is made by FoxConn, and I love eVGA's products.
"we all know the foxconn is a terrible organization that obviously abuses its workers, but we'd rather sit on our computers and use our android/apple phones and tablets to talk about the injustices instead of standing up for what we know is wrong"
good job, world
There's suicides all the time from people complaining about all sorts of things in life, and Foxconn's workforce is larger than that of some countries.
--
Why do companies use foxconn?
Because they're cheaper than other manufacturers.
They have 920,000 employees.
There net income is $2.2 Billion.
That is a very, very low income for the company considering the workforce involved.
If they divided that net income across the employees, each one would get £2391, which frankly isn't much at all.
This leads me to believe that Foxconn is pretty much running as cheap as manufacturers can get, and I think they're most likely doing the best they can to keep the employees as satisfied as possible and shouldn't really be held responsible for some suicides.
It's not like you blame a town if someone who lives there commits suicide, right?
I can blame the town if the town has conditions that are causing people to commit suicide left and right, yeah. Especially if the answer isn't as simple as "Well why don't they just go somewhere else?"
Foxconn is aiming for 1000000 robot workers by the end of 2014, which is good news, I think.
Meaning they'll continue treating their employees like robots, so besides no more people jumping off of buildings nothing will change. :v:

So good luck with that!
huh, kobo isn't on there
yay for gadgets without any apparent slave labor
Call me insensitive, but I couldn't care less about who makes my products and at what rate they're paid. Foxconn employees aren't enslaved and it's not like it's the only employment opportunity in China.
Easy to say that when you don't make <$1 an hour doing a repetitious task all day every day.
And since China has more than a billion people living in it, I'd say decent work isn't easy to come by.

I don't buy any of these products already, I'll continue to not because 80% of these are made with low quality Foxconn trash which I have to replace in a year. I've found all of the products from these companies to have subpar lifespans while having similar prices compared to their competitors. Most notably being EVGA, Asus, Dell, HP, Samsung, Sony and Intel.
All of my EVGA hardware has died, both the backlights in my Samsung monitors went out, I've replaced so much Dell and HP hardware for family and friends which died for no other reason than being shit. My Intel hardware has degraded to the point where it can't be overclocked anymore, takes ages to boot an OS and has many other problems. I have never found a Sony product which is better than it's competitors and the rest of them are pretty much the same thing. I like my Vizio TV though, it was cheap and works.
I realize how huge Foxconn is but you have to realize that just because a small component is made by them doesn't really mean that you're supporting them. That's like saying you won't buy a house because the tackstrips holding down the carpet were made by a company you don't like.
It's funny that Foxconn doesn't manufacture the Archos components and yet the Archos G9 series are the most price-quality efficient tablets in the market.

Yeah, Intel most likely have Foxconn making things like fans and such, they do their own chip fabrication at their own plants.
It's very saddening that this happens. It's damn near slavery. I'd honestly pay the difference in the product itself if it meant the people assembling it made a fair wage.
I'm also curious why machines can't be used to assemble these devices like so many others are.
Go live in your fantasy world where there's no market, corporations, businesses and CEOs.. Do you really think that's even possible?
About the suicides, Foxconn had 14 workers suicides in 2010 but we can't forget they are 920,000+.
In USA alone there's =~12 suicides per 100.000.
It's not a surprise to see a number like that at Foxconn. It's still a terrible situation, but the problem is deeper than Foxconn work methods, there's this huge unemployment rate, there are tons of people that don't know how to do specialized work besides working on a factory.
Also, what are you going to do to those thousands when you replace them all with machines? I don't see it as very good alternative.
It's not so much about how many killed themselves, but why they killed themselves.
