what about that teeny tiny beige sliver that makes up the remaining .94%, what do they use?
I took the survey but had no idea they checked my software. I would not like to participate in further surveys. that kind of creeps me out now.
Dude, they're not checking your computer for porn or anything, they're simply surveying what their users are interested in so that they can continue improving steam to be multifunctional rather than just a game launcher. I hate idiots that go "hurr valve is selling our personal info to third party companies", as those idiots have no idea what they're talking about.

Valve has proven themselves more trustworthy than most game companies. I suppose such panic should be reserved for Ubisoft or Google.
You do have a point. Valve has proven themselves more trustworthy than most game companies. I suppose such panic should be reserved for Ubisoft or Google.
Valve is certainly a company for collecting a shitton of information from their consumers. For example, Valve has even said that a lot of things done with TF2 were experiments to observe how players react. I mean seriously, they're amazing at psychology, especially considering how they're targeting so many audiences at the same time. Valve is probably going to use the software information to add more features to Steam. For example, a music function if they see that a lot of users have music-related programs installed.
I wouldn't have thought they'd embed a media player into Steam for that reason. That'd just be reinventing the wheel. Media player controls in the overlay however might be more realistic. I figured they were checking to see what sort of things they can depend on the end user having, such as making sure people have Adobe Reader in order to distribute game manuals in PDF format, how many people have OpenAL installed, etc. But there's some things which I don't see what application they might have. I guess it just sent Valve a list of everything you have, and that's what we're looking at.
I'm surprised that Silverlight has that many users. No one really uses it for anything.
I wouldn't take this seriously as a source of information on the uptake of Silverlight, as Steam users alone aren't a realistic sample of the Silverlight player's target audience. People who play PC games are probably more 'in-the-know' about computers than the entire consumer base for PCs. Although I agree, I was surprised to see that many people with the player installed.

This survey shows that even gamers are lazy or ignorant motherfuckers when it comes to installing software. Choosing default installation settings is the culprit for the ridiculous percentages of crap like InfoPath, Silverlight, OneNote, Access, Groove etc. And Jesus Christ, Microsoft Works with 15%? That is just weird, considering it is a discontinued MS product and I know nobody who uses or used it. And why is Quicktime (43.95%) as essential as WinRAR (44.73%)? It's a piece of shit video player. Oh and WTF is Bonjour and why does it have 32%?

It's made by apple, and I think they sneak it onto your computer with Quicktime/iTunes. It's pretty redundant in Windows though, since Windows can do all that anyway.
Well, you can't really get rid of IE otherwise shit hits the fan. Technically it should be 100%.
I deleted IE off of my computer with Remove Windows Components, where do I fit on that part of the survey if it's 100%
Most of these apps on the list looks like apps that run in the background
Oh and WTF is Bonjour and why does it have 32%?
It's some annoying Apple program. I think it's their auto-update tool.
It's some annoying Apple program. I think it's their auto-update tool.
Your right, it is... Its basicly what syncs apples hardware and software...

You might want to explain why it is so horrible, because I have no problem with it.
Yes, its a horrible program...
I have McAfee VirusScan Enterprise and I have no issues with it.
