I'm not sure what to think. I agree on the fact there's nothing wrong with that:
But the article makes it sounds like people were really disrespectful so I don't know.
As far as I understand it, people are only mindfull of the big part of the memorial. The rest isn't seen as important. Which isn't all that unusual really. People egnerally only care about the big parts.
They made the place like that, well done City planning.
I saw people doing parkour at the holocaust memorial in Berlin.
Did I make a thread about it? No, and you shouldn't have either.

Yeah, except it's watched over 24/7 by armed guards.
Get over it before people get more idiotized

aka fun-nazis
I'll be sure to take that advice, wouldn't it be great to know that kids are drinking and fooling around on the graves of your passed relatives?
I guess it's a bit different in Britain; on nice days, you'll see people having graveyard picnics. It was a Victorian pasttime, and I guess that's where it comes from. We don't sit on the graves themselves, of course; generally the grass around them. It's not like you're going to see a packed-out graveyard stuffed with people, but I suppose the way I see it is that we're almost doing it along with them; I suppose for bereaved families, it's like they're there in spirit.
if you dont want people having fun in a memorial then stop making them so fun, make it a dull place with no appeal whatsoever

Hahaha, come on guys let's see who could read the names of all the innocent dead victims before getting sleepy! Let's play in the waterfall guys!

haha
I wouldn't treat all of what happened in the OP as the same.
Splashing coffee? Not so good but could've been an accident.
But all in all I like the thought of people being normal, even relaxing in a memorial site. There is nothing worse than a site were people get "totally sad and oh my god how horrible" when there and then go about their life once they leave.
This way, instead of being sealed off from life by our "sense of human decency", the site is an integral part of the cities life again and lets face it, life is not always decent.
However, the greater picture is that it became integrated again and exactly NOT what the terrorists wanted: A scar in the city.
aka fun-nazis
No. Aka the government doesn't want some drunk assholes sprite graffiti all over a place that is dedicated to millions of innocent men, women and children who died a horrible, painful death after a very miserable and full of agony stay in a camp.

ok wow again with the terrorists winning
just because we have a vietnam memorial doesn't mean they won now does it
there's a big difference between what you're saying and what is actually going on
I don't get why they can't lie down or relax there, as long as their assholes aren't kissing some poor mans name.
But food and drinks all over everything? Contain your shit pigs I know we're american but fuck.
Is it a public space?
From what I'm reading, the memorial is run by a non-profit corporation. We've already established that you need to apply for a visitor pass to enter the memorial. It's not a public park.
a free pass
I think the whole situation seems quite poetic.
It shows how keen we are as humans to move forward instead of outright shunning the past, and create livelihood and small talk where once there was death and unimaginable horror.

That's not really the argument though. I don't see anyone complaining about happiness and small talk, but I do see people having a problem with people not showing the bare minimum of respect to the memorial site (having their kids sit on memorials, balancing coffee on the edges, things like that).
I have no problem with people having picnics and such there, as long as they clean up after themselves and don't start disrespecting the memorials.

At it's bare bones, respect is just a set of rules which are advisable to adhere to if you don't want to look like a dick.
There is nothing about placing your coffee on a nearby surface which could make you look like a cruel sadist, unless that was your intention. And even then it's so insignificant that you'd hardly be noticed.
Probably as disrespectful as a major TV network not airing a memorial for an event that happened in a different country because it wasn't "american" enough.
america cleans it ass with 3000 people, who gives a fuck
[editline]3rd September 2012[/editline]
omg 0.0001% of the population died saddest day in american history
Yeah, right, get real.

It absolutely baffles me how many people here have no respect for the dead. These people were all innocent victims of a deliberate terrorist attack. We shouldn't dwell on it incessantly, but there's nothing wrong with respecting the people who died either.
itt people with no social skills arguing that respecting the dead is a buncha bullshit

they got enough respect, these retards need to shut the fuck up and forget about it. i am so dissatisfied with the ridiculous amount of attention 911 gets that when I see a picture of the WTC on fire i think "pwned" and when i see a photo of the jumpers i think "lol n00b." i intend to be as disrespectful as possible until people cannot bring 911 up without expecting jokes.
also if you disagree you're disillusioned, realistically and totally sanely speaking 3000 deaths are nothing. 911 is an inside joke.

Well I'm offended for today.
Well I'm offended for today.
Yeah, because we all know your dad died in 911. Why are you so offended, you have nothing to do with the damn attack.

It's called "empathy," which is a basic human quality that you apparently lack.

...You have rendered me speechless.
I literally cannot comprehend this mindset.
It's called "empathy," which is a basic human quality that you apparently lack.
Why should I care, I don't know any of the people who died. I don't even know anyone who knows someone who knows someone who knows someone who died. I live thousands of miles from New York City, why should I be made to give a fuck? Empathy is being concerned with people's problems, even though 911 is horrible and tragic and whatnot there aren't enough people for me to empathize with for it to be 1/100th as bad as people say it is. Now lung cancer.. That hits close to home. That, I can empathize with.

That reminds me of what Mel Brooks said about his ultimate goal to make Adolf Hitler look like a total buffoon that will never be taken seriously again.

Doesn't sound like a bad idea to me, but I can see why people would object to it.
So I get what you mean about applying the same logic to 9/11 (I've seen several internet images with the same idea), but I suppose the difference in circumstances, how sensitive people feel about it, and various other factors (like my admiration for the Twin Towers) might be an obstacle to getting such an idea accepted.
