Well don't expect anything vastly different if it is released, it is a new tool to them as well.
It's fairly old, they used it for all their advertising of games and even today. It's certainly still new, but they've had the tool for a long time
I may get a ban for posting this but fuck it,It feels relevent now (User was banned for this post ("Reaction video and knew it" - Craptasket))
Valve have to be on the ball for Source 2 to work, if they want to compete with the likes of UE4 and Unity they need to have support lines (lol), documentation and a forum dedicated to it not filled with complete retards (see: steam user forums). However, if they're just trying to recreate another, better Source engine then this is different since it'll be a nice boost to the modding community. I guess we'll have to see what direction they take it at this point. It could just be the engine they make their games on and share with the community again.
yeah. let's not forget source is literally not available for licensing anymore lol
Pbr
what? where did you hear this?
please. ue4 blows anything in the market out of the water. and this is coming from someone who's worked with source (and goldsrc if that matters) for a almost a decade. i honestly don't know what ~groundbreaking~ features source2 has to offer but i'm almost entirely sure it couldn't be anything like ue4. my team has been using ue4 since it first came out and even when it followed a paid subscription model they had more than 200 video tutorials on every single aspect of the editor. since day one. and kept releasing more and more tutorials every week. now that ue4 is free it includes a marketplace with TONS of resources for people to buy and use. and those who had paid for ue4 before it was free get "free" marketplace money to spend on those assets. in my honest opinion source2 isn't going to be anything like that. let's remember that valve is great at releasing patches that completely break development tools like the 2009 and 2013 updates, not to mention they completely abandoned support for older versions of the engine (the focus right now is only on CS:GO and DOTA).
Remember just how popular source modding was with the release of mod tools for the old engine? And then the custom content that people used to make for each game? That time has since faded, but the communities for the current Valve games still express interest in custom content, hence the market place for tf2/dota2/csgo, etc. My point is this: If they do this right, and perhaps if they ever release a new game, maybe, just maybe, another age of fun shit will happen again. I don't know about you guys but I would buy another GMOD running on source 2, provided the same level of community activity was present again
what? where did you hear this?
Guessing it's assumed, if S2 doesn't use PBR it's basically got its laces tied together at the starting line.
I'd like to see how it stacks up against UE4.
what? where did you hear this?

Guessing it's assumed, if S2 doesn't use PBR it's basically got its laces tied together at the starting line.
People found files pointing towards it on Dota workshop tools I think.
People on /v/ are saying Source 2 has no royalties. Is this true, or is it just people taking "free to use" out of context?
With Source 2 on the horizon I think its safe to assume a game reveal at E3.
This has never been as likely as it is now in probably close to 10 years.
People on /v/ are saying Source 2 has no royalties. Is this true, or is it just people taking "free to use" out of context?
/v/ is just a lot of shitposting, though I think you might have to pay royalties or maybe not since valve can get income from other sources.

their main modding tool.
Don't count on it, PBR materials are fairly different to the old rendering styles. It's literally not worth the effort and would likely hold back progress on things that actually matter... like the engine.
Pardon my ignorance, but what's a PBR material?
Larger maps please
Can we get a tech demo then? Anything half-life related would make me feel better.
Here we go bitches, here's to hoping for better lighting and optimization. And lighting in hammer. For fucks sake valve, lighting's a cunt.
...if they want to compete with the likes of UE4 and Unity they need...
But they aren't competing with UE4 and Unity as Source 2 won't be open for licensing. It will only be used for Valve games and content creation for Valve games.
But they aren't competing with UE4 and Unity as Source 2 won't be open for licensing. It will only be used for Valve games and content creation for Valve games.
We will be making Source 2 available for free to content developers.
lern2reed
I have, it says free for content creators. It does NOT say that it will be available for use for anything outside Valve games and since Valve has been shutting down their licensing of the Source engine. I don't know what you think I should take from that statement.
I have, it says free for content creators. I don't think they'll shut down licensing even though they aren't exactly good at it either.
valve stopped licensing source 1 stuff because source 2 was going to be released.
No.
No.
very informative of you would you like to toxx that?
I have, it says free for content creators. It does NOT say that it will be available for use for anything outside Valve games and since Valve has been shutting down their licensing of the Source engine. I don't know what you think I should take from that statement.
They never actually shut down licensing though. If you get your game past greenlight they're willing to talk about licensing IIRC. Titanfall was also released using the Source engine just a year ago. Yes, they've winded down licensing, but that's because the original source engine is outdated and at the end of its life. If you read the next line of the press release you'd see a direct mention of Unity and Unreal Engine both being free, which is odd considering those are full out game engines.
Valve also said that Source 2 will work with Vulkan, which is the replacement of OpenGL, which is a standardization of videogame rendering. Which means that Source 2 is developed to work across different operating systems. The entire implication is for the development of entire games.
/v/ is just a lot of shitposting, though I think you might have to pay royalties or maybe not since valve can get income from other sources.
I really hope not. That's why I went with Unity over Unreal. With Valve's estimated 25-30% and Epic's 5% plus taxes, that's a whole lot of money being taken away before you see a single cent of it.
Valve also said that Source 2 will work with Vulkan, which is the replacement of OpenGL, which is a standardization of videogame rendering.
