the engine looks as good as what the people who use it make of it
Why? The tool was just released. Its not antiquated like the original hammer
There where some references to a SFM2 in source1 SFM.
Left 4 Dead 3 makes sense to be the launch title for Source 2. Its not as major as Half-Life or Counter Strike, so it allows them more freedom to experiment and screw up withoit ruining things as much for fans. I mean would you rather immediately get Half Life on an engine that has yet to see another major release and is largely untested outside internal testing that is never good enough to catch a lot of often major issues? Or would you rather a lesser title serve as the test bed for the engine, and then they can work out major bugs and issues before Half Life?
[editline]4th March 2015[/editline]
I mean if Half Life launched after all this time and was heavily troubled because of the new engine, they'd never be able to do anything again that wouldn't be hated. Left 4 Dead 3 could be awful, and people would forgive them eventually, especially if they took what they learned from that and used it to make Half Life greater.
can't wait for garry to rip it off again
Garry's Mod 2 on Source 2 would in all honesty be really fantastic
iirc HL2 wasn't really the first product released on source either, CS: Source released a few weeks before HL2. Also weirdly enough, Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines (also source engine) was released coinciding with HL2.
So yeah, could make sense to have some downplayed game product like "Left 4 Dead: May as well be #12" to be the first test run for the new game engine.

Half Life 2 also took full advantage of everything Source had to offer at that time so i kinda hope to see a new game from them which also merges the new Source 2 features into gameplay mechanics
That would be awesome to have more then 4 planets to visit.
Huge ships that dont crash the game and npcs everywhere ... I guess its gonna stay a dream
...and FP will make a TF2C build before the TF Team can port Hat Simulator 2 over.
They've already worked on TF2 Source 2 Port didn't they :v:?
Remember this leak:

Left 4 Dead makes absolute perfect sense to showcase their engine too - each level can be completely different to the last. They could experiment with snow, lighting (L4D lighting, orgasm) particles, AI etc etc.
L4D3 makes a lot of sense, and I really wouldn't mind if that's what they launched Source 2 with. Either way, I just want a new singleplayer Valve game.
-snip-
Dude I would be so hyped for L4D3 alone if they confirmed a campaign with dynamic snow effects.
idk about Source2, but doesn't Source1 use some third party code that Valve can't legally make open?
That's what I heard anyway, don't know if there's any truth to that.
Lets hope they've put the proprietary code inside separate bundled & compiled modules that are well documented in order to circumvent just that.

Might be an early shot so take this with a pinch of salt, but to me it looks pretty similar to Source circa Portal 2

Fun fact, Bloodlines was actually finished way before HL2, but they had to delay it because Valve wouldn't let them release the game before their big source engine launch.

Kinda lame to announce it with no videos or information of any kind. Looking forward to seeing it though

Do note this is from 2011.
Do note this is from 2011.
Compared to how long Valve has been developing Source 2, its probably going to look a hell of a lot better than that old picture.

I can't believe that L4D2 looks so empty. Holy shit.
Maybe the tech demo will be HL3

Unlikely.
