In relation to the OP, yeah it is just complete insanity on his estimates.
He's saying that EVERY gamer that enjoys playing games goes out and buys this crap, worse yet hes listing branded rubbish that you pay 50% for just a logo or stylish case.
I spent about $2000 on my new PC at the start of this year and it is pretty much top end, I could have gotten it up to about $2500 if I had bought the very latest graphics cards, but lets face it, two pretty powerful graphics cards netting 4gb video memory, alongside 8gb 1600 DDR3 RAM is enough.
I'd say that ultimately, the argument that a PC is too expensive in terms of upkeep is ridiculous. I just recently built my girlfriend a pretty damn good gaming PC that can run any of the latest games on high settings at 1920x1080 for about £700 ($1100), I could have skimped on so many parts and made it play a little less well but that was her budget.
On the other hand, if you get a 360 it will cost $150-200 off the bat, then if you want a nice pair of headphones and a wireless adapter its another $100 or so, then games are much more expensive if you want to buy them new and you want the biggest TV you can get to play them on, which will cost quite a lot. Over the course I'd say a smartly built gaming PC can outlast a console and cost less in the long run.
oh god this thread.
all the feelings.
So I have to buy every gaming platform and accessory to be a true gamer?
Hahahaha $4,000+ for a rig, get the fuck out of here
Mechanical keyboard master race (Filco Majestouch 2 with Cherry MX Brown here) :v:
People can get used to anything. If you've never used a high DPI mouse, you might not understand why it's better (though mostly for gaming, and understandably, not everyone cares about that), but claiming higher DPI mice are rip-offs is really silly.
As for keyboards, there's not a lot of fundamental improvement you can squeeze out of a standard rubber dome keyboard. To wit, Logitech's gaming keyboards add extras like an LCD screen, extra keys and a hand rest instead. That's fine, people obviously like those things. But if you want to improve the core experience, you have to go mechanical, that bumps the price a LOT, but it also makes a world of difference that is obvious to anyone.
I use my computer for several hours almost every day, thus investing in a good mouse and keyboard is a no-brainer for me. But you have to make the initial leap to understand the difference and why it matters. I was lucky enough to have a store quite close to me selling a selection of mechanical keyboards so I got to try the feel of the various switches before buying, but with some research, it shouldn't be too hard to figure out which keyboard and switch is the right one for you.
Guys I bought a $5600 Alienware (TM) computer but how do I install windows halp

This has to be a fucking joke.
$3,333 for a gaming PC?
Goddamn thats expansive and my 1200 euro PC has better specs
Asus G4sx. Its what im using right now, thing is big enough to actually have a numpad on it, backlit keyboard and pretty good internals. Got it hooked up to a nice HDTV.
Except that you can't upgrade it and playing on a laptop is not really the same shit as playing it on a 27" full HD monitor with a comfy keyboard and not getting so goddamn hot when playing a mid-detail game

This has to be a fucking joke.
Hey, hey you shutup! Its good because it says monster on it and its fucking black ok?
I couldn't read this article. I got to "While Gordon uses his laptop", and I don't know if this article was taken out of context, but all I could think was "who the fuck is Gordon?". And I stopped reading because I have no clue what is going on.
Hahahaha $4,000+ for a rig, get the fuck out of here
Well, $800 of it was for a 27 inch monitor and im sure many other not very necessary addons..
Those prices look legit.
[editline]1st February 2012[/editline]
I think my total cost for my pc would be like $900 and that's pushing it.
But i do have more expensive things like my monitor which costs almost $300 alone, so i could have gotten a cheaper one.

It looks like he has that on there with playdoh.

modeling clay, insulates the mobo and protects it from condensation.
An old case with some fans in it, $0. 2 hard drives with a combined 700 gigs $20 (second hand). 2x2gb ram memory $0 (gotten from a friend) Nvidea gtx 460 $200. Intel q9300 2.5ghz quad core $200.
That, a few extras, some old speakers, a mouse and a keyboard is about $500 for a nice rig, capable of running BF3 on high. $4000 gamer rig my ass.
I'm surprised they didn't mention these beauties http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133347 with like ten of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227774
Yep but my PC is better (not substantially) than the one that costs 3k and I built it for about 1.3 -_-
I am in not in any way saying that their purchases were smart. I built my PC as well, and it's a much better value than any prebuilt shit. The point I was making is that you have to pay to play. Every hobby is going to cost money.
This is fucking ridiculous. They definitely skimmed some crappy listings of components and picked the ones with the highest prices and the names that have "Dragon", "Shadow", "Killer", "Blood", "Storm", "Master", "Pro", "Ultimate" and what the fucking else in it.
A kickass gaming rig REALLY shouldn't set you back more than 2 grand, max. Peripherals and other doohickies included.
Adding aditional motherboards seriously?
I'm just gonna go and add another frame to my bike.

I added six motherboards and GPUs to my computer so I can support 40 monitors all displaying pron at the same time.
Using the same analogy, didn't he basically say people soup up their cars by adding engines?
It's like adding another chassis onto a car to make it go faster.
There's no fan on your CPU, it will light on fire. It could use some RAM. It could also use a GPU. But most importantly, add some wires bro.
GPUs are expensive. He would clearly be better off using that money on 2 or 3 more motherboards.
That chair looks awesome.
I love how this became a discussion about computers then price. Any way your telling me I spent over 43,828 on video games! Well fuck.
GPUs are expensive. He would clearly be better off using that money on 2 or 3 more motherboards.
Scratch everything but the fan (who needs a CPU or case? pussies), just hook 30 motherboards together to a monitor and play Crysis.
Using the same analogy, didn't he basically say people soup up their cars by adding engines?
Gotta go add some engines to my Subaru
brb adding another roof to my house
What actually makes me angry about the article are the comments. To be lumped in with the kinds of people posting on there makes me want to cry.
