Opinion. I don't disagree that the rich should be taxed highly. I don't disagree that taxes generally aren't a bad thing. It's the percentage itself that bothers me.
How do you define optimal wealth distribution?
That depends on what you want: do you solely want economic growth? Do you everyone in your country to have enough to survive? Optimal wealth distribution depends on what you want - and what I want for France is money to be in the hands of the poorer sections of society, not only is it good for them but good for the economy too.
They'll just leave if the taxes are too high... governments compete with eachother too, America might be able to provide lower taxes, and in the long run its a good investment for those being taxed.
By the way I never said rich should be treated specially like is implied in trickle-down economics. Fuck government benefits, just leads to rent-seeking and nasty corruption.
Yeah... give the government all the money, cuz people don't deserve the capital to invest in shit, or spend on goods and services.
These people are already millionaires, they don't need the extra money. They don't all spend their money prudently and invest and even when they do the investments usually only benefit other very wealthy people anyway. So much money is wasted on yachts and sports cars and other decadent extravagances, if it went to the government instead it would be spent of schools, hospitals and other useful things that the government spends its money one.
Yeah... give the government all the money, cuz people don't deserve the capital to invest in shit, or spend on goods and services. What does the government of france do with these billions of dollars that people in the free market wouldn't do?
For instance run a functional education system. Guarantee free universal healthcare. Ensures ecological precautions which require economical compromises, etc etc.
You hear that guys? Thats the sound of every single private jet and their successful owners leaving France

Forget it, libertarians are all about "morality" and "feelings". Interventionism is based on solid, cold hard economics. He won't understand.

Are you sure? I am pretty sure it's just sound of you making airplane sounds like a moron while drooling into your keyboard.

Well yeah it would bother you if you don't understand how it works besides "oh my god 75% is a big number it must be bad."

There's no need to be rude about it. There is also no need to assume that I have one political opinion or another. I post in threads like this because I want to know more. I'll admit that I'm not an expert when it comes to economics, politics, etc. By posting what opinions I do have (even if I'm dumb'd to hell), I can be corrected by others who know more than I do. It also helps me learn to think on my feet (as quite honestly, I'm absolutely horrible at it) and defend my arguments (which again, I am bad at as I have a lot of difficult verbalizing my ideas). If you want to criticize me, criticize the point I am making so that when you've made your point, I do understand.
Government spending being better than capital investment is debatable, another debate. And Yachts aren't a waste of money... the people who make them make huge profits on fine goods.

They already can leave though. If this was true all business would be in Andorra and Nice and other tax havens. No major country can afford to lower taxes enough to compete with these places. In the 1950-70s much of Europe had a top tax rate above 95% and also had vibrant growing economies. It is a fantasy to suggest business would abandon a country with high tax rates, it simply doesn't happen.

I'm on your side bro I'm just trying to demonstrate Poe's Law.
EDIT: I was however being honest about reelecting Hollande, just out of spite.

Yachts are a waste of money when their are literally people starving and living lives of destitution. Surely it would be better if a few ultra wealthy people were unable to buy a second Yacht to save others from a life of poverty.

I'll take it as a sign that I should stop posting and sleep.
Watch as any indudual and business effected by this leaves...
I'm sure France didn't want those jobs anyway.
Every successful individual will move to Russia. Like Gerard Depardieu.
And his nose.
Don´t the rich have most of their money in the stockmarket anyway? And the money they get from that isn´t even taxed?
The problem with this is that a lot of business owners are going to migrate to neighboring countries with much lower taxes which will hurt France's economy, that is why this is a bad idea.
No, vast majority can't and won't.

Hey fuck you, if I worked hard to buy a yacht, then why the hell shouldn't I buy the yacht? Who are you to decide what I do and don't need?

Why did they not leave already? There are already many countries that have a much lower top rate of tax than France.

Switzerland is currently getting lots of rich people who come here to pay less taxes but now, they will be fucking swarmed.
[editline] 29 december 2013[/editline]
Well people above beat me.
tax the big guy more = less jobs available to the small guy. Good job.. France?
Wtf is a culture? I'm going to leave the land my family has lived in for countless generations along with my manor and friends and extended family because these taxes are too high. woe is me
[editline]29th December 2013[/editline]
Maybe I'll move to somewhere else in the EU where the taxes are marginally lower...
Taxing high earners more is still unfair because it punishes people for being successful though.
this coming from an american of course
Hey fuck you, if I worked hard to buy a yacht, then why the hell shouldn't I buy the yacht? Who are you to decide what I do and don't need?
Do you really think most rich people work hard? Do you think the ceo of a company works literally hundred of times harder than his average employee because that's how much more he gets paid. What about all the people who inherited their fortunes or bankers and stockbrokers who made money through interest and luck. Working hard is no guarantee of having lots of money.

Because every rich person in France inherited heir riches and didn't achieve anything by themselves.
