Then the officer would be fired and his department liable for the injures suffered by this lonely samurai. This is why you shoot to kill or don't shoot at all. If the officer shot him in the leg and did not kill him, it would be acknowledged that he was not a lethal threat to begin with and so the officer should not have used lethal force.

on one hand, you have well-trained, sworn officers of the law reacting to what they perceived to be a threat,
but on the other hand, you have a 22-year-old seemingly innocent man in cosplay shot several times in the back

We still don't know if that's what actually happened or if the cops are just covering their asses, considering all of the bullets hit this guy in the back.

The footage (and an eyewitness) shows him running several yards away before being shot to hell. So the county chief deputy attorney changed the story to "he lunged at the officers with the sword and then ran away and was shot", whereas his previous story was "he lunged at them and was shot".
Something is fucking fishy here. We still don't have the full story, but it's certain that he was taken down while running away.

Not necessarily. Plus, even if you're a police officer with a gun, someone who you think is trying to kill you is still pretty scary, so they would end up firing multiple times quickly. It would take some serious fucking discipline to not shoot more than once in an actual life or death situation.

Officers are specifically trained to take down threats as quickly as possible. By nature this employs raid fire and a lot of bullets. For the safety of everyone you must take down your target quickly, completely and effectively.

If I were to find every news article about a cop screwing up or abusing his power, it would equal no where near that number.

Modern media gives greater exposure to this kind of thing, also articles about cops who do their jobs right doesn't nearly garner as much in the way of viewership and ratings. Simple media sensationalism at work.

I make sure to carry around my M16 in public in case those dirty cops try and take my rights, but I make sure to wear my ten gallon hat and american flag button-up so I don't scare any citizens!
