The parents had more dollars than sense.
Inequality, very unlucky people will kill the ones that lucked out.
Probably why he got stabbed in the first place, some people sometimes brag about their privilege.
It's also why my dad wants to hide his name from the press when he wins the lottery, he feels he'll be too good a target if not so.
At least that's how I can look at it, can't really think of another reason why he would be stabbed in the first place.
WHEN he wins the lottery? You mean WHEN all the fucking stars align and the Earth is obliterated by magic space beams from god right?
They are sensationalizing this by making it sound like a pedo attack, 'grooming' oh please!
Obviously these two guys were gay and met for illicit sex and the older one got carried away during rough sex.
So what do you call it when someone has sex with an underage boy, if not paedophilia?
Reminded me of this.

That gave me the heebie jeebies

This sentence really rubs me the wrong way. You can foster legitimate friendships over the Internet. Gah, what ignoramuses.

i won't disagree with this, 2 of my best friends i met through the internet, BUT i really don't think 14 year olds should be fostering relationships with older people over the internet, at least not ones that result in them taking a train ride somewhere random to meet them. if you're going to meet someone you met over the internet ALWAYS do it somewhere safe and public and with other friends

uh
uh what
groomed: "prepare or train (someone) for a particular purpose or activity."
[editline]19th February 2014[/editline]
in this case preparing him to be stabbed, but still
Grrreeaaaatt, here we go again with crucifying video games over the actions of psychotic morons.
Oil millionaire's kid, eh? Great way to get a hit called on your ass.

Wow. That was actually pretty great, I expected something stupid.
parent's fault entirely
edit: these dumbs, what sort of parent lets a 14 year old go off an organise their own sleepover with someone they've never heard of without checking with their parents? they basically let him go off on his own with no idea what he was doing or where he was going.
I completely disagree. Sheltering children is the worst thing you can do and It's child abuse in my eyes. Yes he was murdered but you can't shelter someone forever because there's a chance of that happening.
]But secretly the teenager – who was said to be addicted to online computer games – travelled by train to the flat of an 18-year-old stranger who it is believed he had played with over the internet.
Not this shit again
I completely disagree. Sheltering children is the worst thing you can do and It's child abuse in my eyes.
Yeah, you're completely missing his point here...
There's a difference between 'sheltering' and going 'ok son, so you want to have a sleepover? ring up your mates parents so we can arrange it'.
I completely disagree. Sheltering children is the worst thing you can do and It's child abuse in my eyes. Yes he was murdered but you can't shelter someone forever because there's a chance of that happening.
In this case it seems more like the parents didn't really do their job honestly. Reading through the article it mentions that the kid's mother was suspicious of his online friend already and definitely thought that he was lying. Then they let him go by himself to a friend's for a sleep over without verifying it with the kid's parents or anything.
Seems kinda weird that an 18 year old would be an psychopathic killer.
you cant tell me this wasnt the parents fault, every kid should know not to go with random strangers over the internet, and they should've checked in with his "friend's" parents
the kid is 14 who the fuck just lets their 14 year old off alone to someones house when they know nothing about the person?
The kid made up a story about sleeping over at a friend's house. Not that uncommon when you're fourteen really.
I assume it means: creep contacts him through video games, makes friends, "hey wanna meet lol", and stabbing happens
In this kind of context its usually reserved for child molesters warming up their victims to the thought of sexual contact via exposing them to pornographic material, i think, so it was kind of a weird word choice when they could have just said lured or something
Daily Mail, the use of the term "groomed" was entirely deliberate on their part - wanting summon up exactly those connotations about gamers.

I would not be able to say "I'm a good parent" if I didn't teach them how to navigate through or around life's challenges and especially the dangerous ones. Going over to a friend's house is fine, nothing wrong with that, but I'd want to fucking know everything I could about these people before I let my child go over there.
Friends of 14-year-old schoolboy Breck Bednar told yesterday how he would spend hours speaking to online ‘friends’ – often late at night – who he had never met in real life.
As they played videogames on the internet, they would use a computer program called Teamspeak 3 to chat to each other.
The software allows computer users to make free calls over the internet in a similar way to a conference call.
Users often wear a headset with an integrated microphone so they can talk as they play online with several other gamers. Private chat channels can also be set up by groups which are accessed by invitation only. Teamspeak is free to use but there is a fee if someone wants to block other users from joining in.
Breck is thought to have been a keen player of violent videogame Battlefield 4, which thousands of teenagers play online. Last night Hannah Broadbent, of online protection charity Childnet, said: ‘Young people should bear in mind that it’s not always easy to spot a groomer.
'Often they might be chatting about things you are interested in and you might not realise. You can never be completely sure that a person is who they say they are on the internet.
‘The most important thing is that young people can tell someone if someone makes them feel uncomfortable online.
‘And never meet up in person or share any personal information. If they are contacted by someone who makes them feel uncomfortable it’s important to report it.
‘It’s really important that we educate young people so they know how to navigate the risks.’
oh daily mail
Probably not irrelevant, I'm sure he was targeted for money related reasons
then why did they end up killing their hostage?
Isn't rule #1 of kidnap and ransom not to kill your hostage?
then why did they end up killing their hostage?

Criminals do not follow rules.

If you're ramming some 14 YEAR OLD kid up the ass, do you think you would pull a knife and start stabbing him? I don't really agree that your statement is correct.
Daily Mail, the use of the term "groomed" was entirely deliberate on their part - wanting summon up exactly those connotations about gamers.
What would you call it then?
What would you call it then?
He befriended the guy, albeit under false pretences, with murder in his heart.
There, was that so hard?
That's the definition of grooming.
He befriended the guy, albeit under false pretences, with murder in his heart.

But grooming would in fact still work for what you said.
I completely disagree. Sheltering children is the worst thing you can do and It's child abuse in my eyes. Yes he was murdered but you can't shelter someone forever because there's a chance of that happening.
It IS possible to keep your kids safe, smart, and aware of the dangers of the world without it being considered "sheltering" them. To let them do their own thing without them knowing a single fucking thing about how dangerous the world can be is way worse than sheltering them.
Criminals do not follow rules.
They don't follow society's rules. They still have their own rules.
I think grooming describes one person doing some kind of manipulation on another person to enable certain behavior, such as sexual behavior.
Becoming friends is not automatically grooming. Inviting a friend over is not grooming. Killing the friend is not grooming. I'm not seeing anything in this story, yet, that even hints at grooming being involved.
The article is written as if it's a given that the 18 year old was grooming younger people for sex and/or murder. It might have been just two friends meeting in order to hang out, then for some reason they had a conflict and the older one got all stabby.

kids/teens lie.
a friend of mine was raped by a guy she met online. she had told her parents she was meeting up with a friend from school that they knew.
don't know if something like that was the case here. you can try to blame whoever you want, the only one I blame is the murderer.
