First, it's "The Sun", secondly, 9 year-olds in Britain don't get taught War in primary school, they learn about Roman engineering and Ancient Egypt and the cool shit of History.
It's only when you go into Secondary school (ages 12-16) is when you learn about War in history.

Saying that they thought he was a football coach is unfair. The question wouldn't have been "who was hitler?", but something like "was hitler a) head of the nazi regime in the 1940s or b) a german football coach". Those who don't know who he was would guess, and the name sounds german so they might pick the football coach option because it mentions Germany. Also this is 2000 9 to 11 year olds, and the whole thing was run by a charity called Erskine, and this is a good way to a) get their name known and b) get parents to teach their kids about the horrors of WW2, which will encourage them to donate to the cause in general.

Maybe it's in England or something that they think that, because as part of the Scottish National Cirriculum you have to do at least one unit on the Second World War at some point in your education...
It was definitely the kids that think they're funny by answering the dumbest things. Then the last question is did you answer the questions truthfully, and you say yes. Another answer was probably they have taken drugs 50 times in the past week and frogs are able to fly.
You can't expect kids in that age to know a thing about WWII. First of all, they don't teach that young kids about it in school in a lot of countries, second of all, they won't learn themself because I don't think many has interest. But it's obviously fake since I don't even see how most of the kids they interviewed in that age would be dumb enough to come up with a football coach.
If you trust the Sun then you're no better than the kids.
