If facebook had a spine they'd go "If you dont like our policy, dont use our service."
If facebook had a spine they'd go "If you dont like our policy, dont use our service."
That's right, being exclusionary and alienating customers for the sake of a policy no one asked for is the key to business success
I don't want my real name on the internet, but all facebook can do is "sorry"? They have gone without this policy for years, I think it's pretty awful of them to start requiring all of your personal information.
Re-read this thread, perhaps? Facebook has had this policy for over 10 years, it just wasn't highly enforced the whole time.
Doesn't mean I should have to put up with that on Facebook
And yet I still have every right to do that. You not liking my choice in alias does not in any way invalidate my right to go under any alias I choose.
Well, it IS their real name. Not facebooks fault that prudes can't handle it.
I don't even know where to start with this post the misuse of the word "irony"? the awful pun? the blatant disrespect for the LGBT community? jesus
Blatant disrespect? I don't see the blatant disrespect. He's right, a lot of people get offended FOR LGBT people. I've had people get really pissed off at me if a friend of mine calls me a faggot. I didn't take offense from my friend but people will swoop in, get angry at my friend, then get angry at me for not being offended.
Well, it IS their real name. Not facebooks fault that prudes can't handle it.
"Prudes" isn't even the correct word to use in this context. This is just an oversight by Facebook, they likely didn't think of trans folk who don't want to be called their legal name.
If I want to go online under the alias "Badass McDix" I have every right to be. I do not need any reasoning behind this choice either, simply wanting to go online as Badass McDix is all that is necessary.
Freedom of speech entails government involvement. Facebook can enact any rule they want, since it's their website, and you've no obligation to use it. You can absolutely be Badass McDix, and they can absolutely say "not on our website, you're not." [editline]2nd October 2014[/editline] Also, sidenote:
but also from people who feel unsafe using their real names on the Internet.
If you're one of those kinds of paranoid people, maybe social networking isn't for you.
It's totally fine if you're not offended by it but plenty of people are for perfectly valid reasons, and shouldn't everyone make an effort to not encourage rudeness for no reason
No i'm talking about people getting angry at me because i don't take offense to the word faggot. It's dumb. It's honestly more adorable than anything if someone actually tries to insult a homosexual by calling them a faggot. Like, really? that's the best you can do? A word that has long ago lost most of it's meaning to just general slang. Real witty bro, i'm feeling hurt no really i am you really got me there. My point though is that a lot of people act like social justice warriors on the behalf of people without the people they're 'protecting' even wanting them too.
I have a feeling if it upset any other community other than the LGBT one Facebook wouldn't care.
um they also chose to only actively go after LGBT and not any other group so
idk the white pride community can suck an egg if thats what you're saying
The point flew well over your head. What he means is that Facebook doesn't really give a fuck about the LGBT people. They're just pandering, they don't want to piss off a group with some very zealous and influential supporters. If, say 70% of Americans were nationalists who didn't want to see people of other races show up in the recommended friends page, Facebook would find a way to cater to them.
So many people get sensitive if Homo-Sexual people get upset... So that's why facebook had to clear their name. Get it? "name" Irony
Oh yeah because America and the world care so deeply about the queer community.

I mean, just look at how many people are murdered, just for being cisgender! It's disgusting. Remember, cis people: It's okay to use your real, birth name, you don't have to change it. Seriously, though. How do you know that they don't give a fuck and they're 'just pandering'? How are you comparing people who unchangeably feel that their sex is opposed to their gender to racists?
If you're one of those kinds of paranoid people, maybe social networking isn't for you.
Yeah, like those paranoid weirdos who have escaped abusive relationships and are terrified their abuser will track them down again and continue to abuse them, a thing that happens a lot.
Yeah, like those paranoid weirdos who have escaped abusive relationships and are terrified their abuser will track them down again and continue to abuse them, a thing that happens a lot.
Thus, maybe social networking isn't for them. They're still paranoid. Justifyably so in this case, but nevertheless. What's your point?
"someone shouldn't be able to do normal people things because they've been abused"
If you live in fear that someone might track you down but still use social networks that are meant to keep track of people... then it might not be such a smarty pant idea. Sure, changing name should be a layer of security, but it's still best to keep off of them as much as possible. Social networks aren't necessary to live.
Really? I mean it makes a lot of sense from a PR-Perspective because the LGBT community and everything that comes with it has the loudest crybabies of the internet, aka they could actually spread the news beyond their kin. Facebook should have just changed the policy but why apologize? And why apologize just to the LGBT community? What's with people that don't want their real name on Facebook? Kind of proves they just did this to shut them up and give Facebook some good PR.
Boo fucking hoo, it's there just to sift out people like xXjamesXx.
Knowing xXjamesXx in person, I can tell you he uses his real name on facebook...
The policy is bloody retarded anyway because it never let me have my legitimate name I was born with, which is on my birth certificate, my driving license and everything. Probably because it has "troll" in it. Still, they can go suck a fat one.
Truly transgender individuals have so much privilege in today's world. I mean, just look at how many people are murdered, just for being cisgender! It's disgusting. I mean the LGBT community is gaining a lot of momentum, and making them angry isn't a good idea for a business. Because big businesses like Facebook seldom have morals. It's not a pessimistic thing to say, but if an action will hurt their business, they'll abstain from it. Because they're both groups that exist, and I was pointing out if if nationalists were extremely influential then Facebook would pander to them as well. Private businesses are a bit more likely to take actions because it's "the right thing to do", but facebook now answers to shareholders afaik. Who are especially concerned with maximizing income.
Freedom of speech entails government involvement. Facebook can enact any rule they want, since it's their website, and you've no obligation to use it. You can absolutely be Badass McDix, and they can absolutely say "not on our website, you're not."
And that makes it okay, because it's legal? I think most people would agree the law doesn't align perfectly with everyone's idea of what's right. Although I'm sure Facebook and their advertising partners will be very sad their tracking database is being cluttered with fake names. Poor multi-billion-dollar corporations :'(
And that makes it okay, because it's legal? I think most people would agree the law doesn't align perfectly with everyone's idea of what's right.
Except people are saying they have the right to use any name they want. And they do, but not on a service owned and controlled by a company that has the right to stipulate that you use your real name as part of the terms of service. You can't argue that you have a legal right to something and then backpedal to 'well the law and what's right aren't the same' when someone calls you on it.
Wait, quick question: If you're going to identify as the other gender with an entirely different name, why wouldn't you get your name legally changed?
you need a lawyer to change your name legally, not to mention the time it takes for it to be processed. [editline]2nd October 2014[/editline]
Really? I don't see people complaining about legal names in cards and IDs, so why Facebook?
If I want to go online under the alias "Badass McDix" I have every right to be. I do not need any reasoning behind this choice either, simply wanting to go online as Badass McDix is all that is necessary.
Yeah, you can go online with that name, but Facebook won't allow it on their service. You don't have a right to have any name you want on your Facebook profile. Now, I understand that people in the LGBT community are upset over this, but Facebook's original purpose was to find people you went to high school/university with and such. Them not using their real name makes it a lot harder, and a general policy change would mean an influx of people called "Big Dick Michael" and such - personally I find it annoying when people get through with silly names, makes it hard to find them. Now, this doesn't mean those with legitimate reasons for wanting a "fake name" on their profile, but you kinda have to understand Facebook's angle on this as well.
Why is your ability to conveniently find someone you don't even know well enough to know they go by a different name more important than their self identity Also no, Facebook was originally for current college students to connect to other current college students. You had to have a university email to even sign up [editline]2nd October 2014[/editline] A fair share of my Facebook friends use their middle names as last names and I still managed to find them because I'm not a dunce. Not to mention married women.
People still use facebook?
If you're one of those kinds of paranoid people, maybe social networking isn't for you.
I have a twitter and a facebook, my real name is in none of those places, but somehow I still manage to be, you know, social, and use the websites for what they were made for, and made some new friends by using them. It's magic, right? No, it's actually just you being an idiot. [editline]2nd October 2014[/editline]
If you live in fear that someone might track you down but still use social networks that are meant to keep track of people... then it might not be such a smarty pant idea. I absolutely loathe my classmates from college, but they think I'm cool. I don't want to be getting requests from them so I just put in a fake name and made my profile private. It both keeps the retards I don't like out and doesn't stop me from talking to the people I do like at all. Again, freaking magnets, right?
