The landmark ruling was of course that the press (Which Assange and Wikileaks technically are) are free to publish documents leaked to them. One of his lawyers mentioned this to a former US politician (a former assistant secretary of state who happens to also be a former professor of law) who was arguing that it was illegal on newsnight (British TV show for those who do not know) a few days ago and she was almost speechless. He then suggested that she studies her own constitution.
maximum zing
I don't think the US are dumb enough to put nuclear missiles anywhere near a connection to the public internet.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_McKinnon Yeah... about that. [editline]10th December 2010[/editline]
They could if the leaked files contain the IP addresses, login details, DoD encryption certificates, and launch codes of some nuclear weapons control computer. :smug:
...Did you actually just rate your own fucking post? I am calling attention to the fact this guy just rated his own post!
And now we know what rape means in Swedish. "spying", apparently, would have been a lot easier to say that in the first place.
is anybody really surprised they'd do this they've already put such a huge stigma on him over the US that nobody is going to riot about it anyway, not like rioting has ever gotten people released from jail anyway here's hoping the doomsday file is something pretty fucking awful but manages not to cause war which it wouldn't anyway
Riots happen when you get large groups of idiots together who have no idea how to solve a problem, so they all just start breaking shit like wild animals.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_McKinnon Yeah... about that. [editline]10th December 2010[/editline] ...Did you actually just rate your own fucking post? It's a perfectly natural urge Facepunch users have at a certain age. There is nothing wrong with it!
Oh charging him with a 100 year old law that was highly controversial even back then? Oh ok great job A+
There's nothing wrong with rating one's own posts. It's a perfectly natural urge Facepunch users have at a certain age. There is nothing wrong with it!
gave you a dumb to compliment it then
I'm itching to open up this file god damn best christmas present ever
Hopefully the insurance files release be a good thing. As a US citizen, I'm scared of the coming future, already there's boycotts of American goods and services, and Americans generally viewed as idiot. This will most likely affect me for the rest of my life, and all I can do now is observe what is happening while I'm stuck here in the U.S. There's nothing I can really do about corruption it seems
...Did you actually just rate your own fucking post? I am calling attention to the fact this guy just rated his own post!
Aaaahahaha! I'm crying, im crying ahaha
Assange sappin' my government?
Even though I don't support Wikileaks, I'm calling bullshit on this. He's not the one uploading shit.
And now we know what rape means in Swedish. "spying", apparently, would have been a lot easier to say that in the first place.
Maybe its a translation issue, he has actually been accused of spying by surprise without using a condom.
America saw that Iran was charging non-spies with spying and wanted to join the fun
Assange is just a journalist, the government should go after the leakers, not a journalist publishing information. It is the leakers that have done the spying, not assange and these charges are complete bullshit.
I knew wikileaks was to good to last long
I wonder if they'll utilize the Insurance File. Am looking forward to the future events.
Releasing the insurance file would also destroy WikiLeaks itself. I don't think they'll let that happen unless it's looking really bad for Assange.
Shit just hit the fan
Shit just hit the fan
Shit hit the fan two weeks ago, where were you.
Why cant they just not release the file password and maybe they will let them go? Then they could go back to leaking other things that aren't as big. When I mean big I mean something that the government would try to get Julian imprisoned for.

If they let him go in return for not releasing it, then he's won. They don't want that.
Shit hit the fan two weeks ago, where were you.
Thinking that it would all blow over, but then anon got involved so that though died
By hosting on American soil with amazon servers they could actually file a lawsuit against him. Seems pointless for me as he isn't the leaker, but the distributor and shall not be punished, but that just my point of view. If it's up to some trigger happy [del]fascists[/del] nutcases they'd hang him right before Christmas. How the fuck is distribution spying anyway? He didn't go whistling to a PC, copied files and walked away jolly good.
Selling goods known to be stolen is also a crime. This is a sound accusation. http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/18/usc_sec_18_00000798----000-.html It really is a law.
Good, then all the news networks can go back to reporting on more important things than this wikileaks bullshit

But it is no different to a newspaper publishing it, and (please correct me if I am wrong) I have never heard of a newspaper being hunted down with similar charges for publishing leaked documents.
Basically this. It's the same thing with Watergate scandals where they tried to prevent news organizations from publishing information. I posted this article in another thread but it's supportive of this point as well. http://blogs.wsj.com/law/2010/07/26/pentagon-papers-ii-on-wikileaks-and-the-first-amendment/
I'm itching to open up this file god damn best christmas present ever
Sounds like your parents didn't love you.
Charging a journalist for spying is bullshit
Charging a journalist for spying is bullshit
perhaps the government has some secrets that they dont want let out me thinks and are willing to stop the freedom of the press right in order to keep it that way. not to say its a 9/11 cover up or anything
