Because governments are run by people who make mistakes. People have been wrongly convicted "beyond a shadow of a doubt" and sentenced to death only to be exonerated with DNA evidence after the fact.
That fucking sucks. For me, it hasn't nothing to do with moral qualms regarding the sanctity of a murderer's life. If we've killed 1 innocent person (we've killed more), we shouldn't kill at all. One innocent's life is not worth the death of the other 99.9% (or whatever the statistic is) that actually committed the crime. Let's bite the bullet, keep them locked up for life, and stop fucking murdering people.
