A federal appeals court on Monday ruled that Apple (AAPL, Tech30) could not seek damages from Samsung for copying the basic design of the iPhone, overturning a lower court's ruling.
Apple had argued that Samsung's smartphones violated the company's design patents, because they looked so remarkably similar: a rectangular body, rounded edges, and even the placement of apps and dots on the screen.
Yet the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled that the overall "look" of the iPhone is so integral to the way other touchscreen smartphones work that Apple can't prevent Samsung (and probably other companies) from using the same general designs.

Finally! It happened!
The days of the black rectangle are upon us again
The Chinese markets must be booming with clones now.
About fucking time. I can't believe we had to wait this long for a court to state the obvious.

Nothing wrong there
the return of the samsung SII body
I'm an Android guy but I like the iPhone 6 plus design.
this is stupid

funny thing is that it already was
Yeah theoretically all smartphones are going to have the same basic design but come on.
As much as a lot of people hate it the iPhone is by far the most successful smartphone out there, phone manufacturers see that and go "hey, people will buy more of our toy if we make it look a lot like that toy and make it cheaper".
It has been done. Not necessarily illegal, but it has definitely been done.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 didn't look like the iPhone much, except it was black and rectangular.
Yet Apple got their knickers in a twist.
begone, squircle phone bodies

Nothing ever stopped the chinese from copying anything tbh :v:
Eh screw the iphone design, give me an Octagon shaped phone.
God damn I would love a phone that is designed like an S2 again.
Samsung Galaxy Ace is more similar to an iPhone 4 than an S2 anyways, can't see why they had to pull the S2 design :/
and i bought an 1+1 already, too late for a new S2 now :v

I don't hate the iPhone. I dislike Apple for trying to patent a fucking SHAPE. Especially when its a design that more or less EVERY smartphone uses. Its anti-competitive. If you must make your phone stand out, do so by making it a QUALITY phone.
Not too surprised.
Same thing happened with the automobile back around the turn of the century.

All those Korean copycats.
The chinese cars were too blatant to not get sued (not to mention hilariously unsafe)
Guess I can't shitpost on /g/ with this anymore.

I'm still rocking my S2. I never really heard about all of this nonsense going on, but did they fundamentally change the Galaxy's design from the S3 onwards? Like I know they're way more rounded and 'bubbly' and whatnot but I just figured that was them trying to be all sleek and aerodynamic and modern. Do you mean to say they intentionally ditched the more square / sharp corners of the S2 because of some Apple legal bullshit?
What a tragedy. I LOVE my S2's shape! We have everyone using S3's and S4's here at work and I'm so sick of handling them, they feel so awkward. I love blocky harsh phone designs.
I'd take one of those amazing flip phones SoftBank and NTT sells over an iphone any day.
To bad I'll never have vanilla android on an iPhone designed with Qualcomm chipset and android GPU. That would be the best of both worlds :)

too bad they already were, both hardware and software-wise

i'm starting to get irritated by the abundance of "find one flaw" threads on that board

That's some wonderful idealism and all, but what do you suppose actually happens in the real world if you release an extremely successful product but don't patent any of it? You think all the competitors sit up and say 'Wow, we're really getting beaten here, we should try making a QUALITY product completely independently and not try to emulate our competitor's product at all'?
I'm not a fan of Apple's business practices either but of course they're going to patent everything about the design they can, especially considering good product design is their hallmark. It's in their business interest to secure as much legal protection from copycats as possible. I blame the patent office for actually approving patents on shapes.
iPhone design is garbage, we need more sliders and flippers and physical keys in general. the old Droid was the way to go, but they abandoned it in favour of more of the same old tired solid candybar with a touchscreen dominating everything...

There's plenty of component and software related patents, shape and concept patents need to be left in the dust when it comes to phones and electronics. An iPhone and a galaxy s6 look very different internally and only similar at a glance externally
Patents by design are anti-competitive. They are meant to provide a competitive advantage to those who invent stuff. How the fuck Apple patented a rectangle with round edges as the shape for a phone in the first place is beyond me.

I'm on a galaxy ace style at the moment, i was honestly just using it as a temp phone cause i destroyed my Nexus 5 but rooted with Yahoo's Aviate launcher, it looks pretty damn nice. Shame there's no branch of CM for the style though, would love to have some of the shit like fast charge and whatnot.
