To say that it's pointless to present an argument against the death penalty doesn't make sense. Over half of the American population supports the death penalty (although it has been declining), which is why it's important to back your argument. Yeah, it seems like it's something that shouldn't be argued, but there's still a lot of people who think otherwise. First of all the due process involved with the death penalty ends up costing far more than just keeping a prisoner in prison for life. Second of all the chance of not putting an innocent person to death is not absolutely 100%. And of course there is no point in the death penalty at all for all the flaws it has. It accomplishes nothing. It doesn't make the world a safer place because the criminal is contained and no longer a threat to society. If this were some country that had trouble keeping their dangerous murderers contained then it would be more understandable but I'm talking about first world countries like America that have no excuse. And this is ignoring the glaring moral issues with allowing a state to kill someone who isn't an immediate threat to anyone.
