I heard somewhere you have to buy new tools to mine more stuff, is this the case?

When I first started it up on android, both layers were black and it had not synced with anyone else so it wasn't tapped anywhere. Every time I tapped I got another multiplier, I got up to 128x and had 11,150 coins. Then it synced, and I only got a multiplier every like 20 taps and I was unable to gain any coins. Am I doing something wrong?

Do you have to login to facebook to be able to connect to everyone else?

No, if you can't see anyone else's taps, it's just because the server is overloaded at the moment trying to deliver updates to everyone.

For the most part it runs fine on my Rezound, but at times it does become lag city and I end up loosing my combo.

this only runs at like 20fps on the ipod 4g

So what I'm getting from this is that the servers weren't ready and a cube consisting of smaller cubes is apparently much harder to render than things like Max Payne and all those 3D games for iDevices gj molyneux
