My bank says in their terms that length is "set by the market standard", and that outside of Canada they suggest I use a 4-digit number because most machines dont allow more numbers apparently.

I know a few people who have had to cancel trips outside Canada because they couldn't use their >4 digit pins and had their cards cancelled due to foreign POS/ATM equipment.
use the drive through ATM's and make sure to look at that mirror thingy
...or you just do what I do, and have 3 accounts in the bank.
#1 -- Savings (for saving [good interest rate])
#2 -- Savings (not for saving, but for safekeeping [rainy day])
#3 -- Transaction Acct
I use my transaction account at any POS and ATM when I am out and about.
But, I make sure that there is no more than 50$ in there at a time.
Why $50? I use my phone to transfer money to the account from my rainy day account if needed.
Same goes with online purchases; if the online price is $230.99, I will put $241 in, just incase there are any hidden costs, but it stops anyone from clearing my account.

It was most likely keyboard encyrpted, as in moving your hands to the wrong spot of the keyboard on purpose and typing. Turns "Password" into "_wee305r"
