lol pirate party. They will never win because they have no political platform. It's just "hurr let us download whatever we want"
you have no idea what you're talking about.
you have no idea what you're talking about.
Started in 2009, the Pirate Party of Canada strives to reform Canadian information laws to meet the needs of the new century.
We are in favour of:
Copyright reform
Reform of the patents system
Better respect for privacy
Net neutrality
Open government
Digital sovereignt
Thats all they mention about their "political platform" All they care about is changing the Canadian information laws. What's their take on afghanistan, health care, anything that isn't related to downloading/internet privacy?

Hello I am here to explain how the situation is because I only read headlines and assume the name means everything and that is why I am expert.

You talk like they will be running the country, at most they are going to get 1-2 seats.
Hello I am here to explain how the situation is because I only read headlines and assume the name means everything and that is why I am expert.
I've read all about them and I have yet to see them talk about anything that isn't related to net neutrality/downloading/privacy etc.
Although, if they have, let me know.
Does this mean every canadian would be allowed to own a boat, plunder for treasure and rape women?
What is the problem?
A patent grants its owner a 20 year monopoly over the use of an invention. In the fast moving software industry, inventions however always builds on previous work. Issuing patents on software therefore exposes all innovators to the risks of major lawsuits. This reduces innovation, meaning that your software will be harder to use and will not offer the features you need.
How do we solve it?
We want to ban patents on software to spur innovation and allow new start-ups to enter the market without the fear of being sued for building upon previous work. We also want to ban patents on life forms and plants since we find the notion of corporations owning the ingredients to life downright unethical.
Wow, really? That's fucking stupid.
The UK needs one.

These pirate parties seem to have no official ideology or dogma of how to run a country. That's a major turn off for me.
The plan isn't to run the place. What these parties are trying to do is mainly to stop the rape of personal integrity currently going on in many countries.
Estonia needs a REAL one that actually DOES STUFF
Wow, really? That's fucking stupid.
Why is that? The idea of patenting code is the only fucking stupid thing here.
People who don't know how Canada's government works need to stop commenting, or learn how to read, since Zeke explained the whole thing really well.
As it stands now, the Pirate Party is probably a little unneeded in Canada, but if the government starts an RIAA-esque branch, I'll be voting for them when I can.
WE GOT THEM TO!
AHOOY.Arrrr
Why is that? The idea of patenting code is the only fucking stupid thing here.
So I am not allowed to patent something that I create? This pirate party (if they win seats) will just be taking up seats that could be put to good use by other candidates.
These pirate parties seem to have no official ideology or dogma of how to run a country. That's a major turn off for me.
They aren't trying to run the country, they just vote on issues relevant to their interests and push for things.
just a voice. Their plan is not to take over the country and turn it all shit. Basically (atleast in germany) they are the representatives of the gamer fraction in the parlament.
But our pirate party got some bad light shed on it as one of the leaders had child pornography on his pc...
The Pirates are not there to represent gamers. They represent the German citizens who don't think that the Internet is something invented by an evil professor in a dark basement lab. They represent those who know what they are talking about when it comes to new media forms in general. They represent alternative ways of regulating new media related crimes as opposed to blocking and banning everything. They stand for every citizen's right for privacy and medial freedom and fair sharing laws.
There has never been someone in the Pirate Party convicted of possessing child porn, especially not someone in a leading position. You might be talking about Jörg Tauss. He has long been opposing Internet censorship - he apparently started researching distributional ways of CP an thus ended up on the contact list of a man selling CP. When that guy was caught, they raided homes of everyone he had contact to.
Although not convicted of actually possessing child porn, Tauss' party took the case as a perfect instrument to politically disable him.
Later that year he then joined the Pirate Party to find a party that doesn't work against him.
tl;dr You don't know what you're talking about
I'd like to see these guys in Parliament with a seat or two.
Decently likely too, since the Liberals seem to have shifted farther right, leaving alot of room for more progressive votes to be directed to these guys, along with the Greens and the NDP
I've always looked at piracy as being socialism mandated by the people. I know I'd certainly vote for a pirate party, if I had one to vote for.
So I am not allowed to patent something that I create? This pirate party (if they win seats) will just be taking up seats that could be put to good use by other candidates.
Wouldn't you rather for it to spread and make good use elsewhere by many people? Freeware and open source is a huge and thriving community. Besides, software patents are more trouble than they're worth in the end; you as an individual would hardly have the resources to prosecute someone who were using your code without your permission, you'd lose more in the court process than you'd ever make on your sales. What's happening now is that huge companies like Apple and Microsoft hoard their technology in between them, hurting the market and in the end us customers in the process.
The only problem that I see is that some of their goals are very ambitious. Biggest one is copyright reform, AKA shitstorm in a can going to hell in a handbasket. Copyright is not going to change for the better. Another thing that will only change when hell freezes over is patents, for example they want to abolish medical and software patents. While I support their efforts and ideas honestly the stuff they want to change makes too many rich people too much money and probably isn't going to happen no matter how many everyday people support it.

Microsoft and Apple made their own technologies, they should be able to do what they want with them, since it's their property.
America has a pirate party. Although it's small, so the only guy they have running (For mayor or something) is some religious guy that I am not fond of at all. He looks like another person that would bring more religion into our government.
Became a member. Should be getting my card in a few weeks.
how complicated, our american ways are far more superior and simple, in every election, there's only two candidates running at any given time to make it easier and simple for us americans
silly zeke and silly canadians.
And this is why people think all American are arrogant douche bags...

Hurr hurr. So far all your posts have been not very intelligent. They don't want power, they want a seat or two so that they can have a hand in governing, another voice of a different party. How is this bad? Copyright reform is an important issue.
The market will soon stagnate and reach a point of no real improvement due to the fact there's no fucking competition due to the patenting of simple software code. That's not what patents were developed for, the concept of them was developed for the opposite purpose in fact. Though, I don't expect anyone to know that.
Microsoft and Apple made their own technologies, they should be able to do what they want with them, since it's their property.
They also buy smaller software developers to keep their software from reaching anyone else. On top of the other shit they do.
You do realize they're not going to win...right? Man, some people can be incredibly naive.
They're not trying to win. In fact, they cannot "win". They're trying to get a vote.
Special interest parties that put all of their eggs in one basket haven't a snowball's chance to make it very far, but at least parliamentary democracy permits fringe parties to take part in the legislative process on a limited scale.
