Special interest parties that put all of their eggs in one basket haven't a snowball's chance to make it very far, but at least parliamentary democracy permits fringe parties to take part in the legislative process on a limited scale.
For the last fucking time, they don't want to win. Read the fucking thread. They don't want to win, they only want to be included in the democratic process. Why do people not get this? You can run for a seat and not want to win. This is the way it should be, where interests can have their voices heard.
Fuck.
I know who I'm voting for next election.

Yeah, this. We've already got special interest parties with a good deal of support. Green Party Leader Elizabeth May came impressively close to dethroning Peter MacKay, who's pretty damn high up in the chain of Tory command. And the Bloc Quebecois are the third party in Parliament right now. Environment-focused and Francophone rights/Quebec sovereignty-focused parties, though they do have policy on other things, if I remember correctly.

I also think a Green seat would be neat to have, personally
Started in 2009, the Pirate Party of Canada strives to reform Canadian information laws to meet the needs of the new century.
We are in favour of:
Copyright reform
Reform of the patents system
Better respect for privacy
Net neutrality
Open government
Digital sovereignt
Thats all they mention about their "political platform" All they care about is changing the Canadian information laws. What's their take on afghanistan, health care, anything that isn't related to downloading/internet privacy?
Who cares? most platforms are terrible and never acted on, and most prime ministers don't do anything anyway.
Who cares? most platforms are terrible and never acted on, and most prime ministers don't do anything anyway.
The Prime Minister has next to no power whatsoever. Parliament holds the power.
What about when the Prime Minister has total control of their Caucus, and boots anyone who disagrees with them?
The Prime Minister has next to no power whatsoever. Parliament holds the power.
I meant the government in power.
Obama has been going at this healthcare thing for 2 years now, if the pirate party were ever actually elected, they'd need more than a few terms to get all these copyright laws working.
-snip stupidness-
What about when the Prime Minister has total control of their Caucus, and boots anyone who disagrees with them?
Pretty sure they can only do that within their own party. It's not like Harper can round up all the Liberal MPs and replace them with Conservatives.
And before you mention proroguing parliament, that's ultimately the Governor General's decision. (The black french lady)
Canada =/= America. Our two systems are extremely different as already pointed out. In the states, a single riding/seat/whatever would have little say in anything to my knowledge, it's different up here though.
Hurf durf I am Canadian.
The Pirates can't be defeated, and they never will, my boy.
Now let's all celebrate with a bottle of rum.
YARRRRRRRRR. :yarr:

Fifteen men on a dead man's chest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
Drink and the devil had done for the rest

Well then, my bad. Not paying attention.

I know he can't. I was kinda taking a stab at Harper.
And I'm aware of the proroguement bit. I still find it shameful that every time something seems to happen, he aims to suspend parliament until the dust settles from the current controversy

I thought it meant that kind of pirate.
:(

A bill did pass that doesn't allow parliament to be prorogued longer than 7 days without HoC approval, but it's not binding and I don't understand why.
lol pirate party. They will never win because they have no political platform. It's just "hurr let us download whatever we want"
I can tell you have a lot of knowledge about this.
Oh nice. Totally supporting.

So they voted that the PM has to get the consent of the Commons if he wants to prorogue parliament for, say, a month. And yet with the motion passed, Harper, or any other future PM for that matter, can just dismiss and go straight to Michaelle Jean and get that month anyway, provided she approves?
[editline]09:52PM[/editline]
it's an unofficial motion that merely shows what the majority of the House wants, but doesn't affect parliamentary procedure, in other words?
Dude, fuck that. Everybody vote for the green party.
Nien, vote for Liberals
Lesser of two evils, considering that Layton's both a fool and hasn't a chance of getting close to becoming PM, and the BQ actually can't hold the position of government.
Though Iggy is a man I don't trust, almost on par with Harper
Canada really doesn't have any great choices right now. Iggy isn't so great... Harper is a terrible choice, Layton could work, but not so well. Some minority government would be fools play, but we can't let Iggy or Harper have a majority government any time soon.
facebook "political views" changed mother fucker!
All British colonies probably work the same.
Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United Kingdom all use a parliamentary system called the "Westminister system."
As well, it's only as complicated as you think it is.
- You have a riding
- 3, 4, maybe more people running (people can run as independents; they sit in parliament and vote but do not partake in party caucuses)
- 3, 4 people running who represent a major political party
- you elect one of them as the representative for your area
- the party with the most representatives forms a government
It's a lot like the American House of Representatives, only with more parties.
I agree with a lot of the Pirate Party's platform, but I will not be voting for them. They will remain a fringe party at best, if they don't dissolve due to lack of funds. Which I guess is too bad, but like the OP said, the best (left wing) protest vote you can make without throwing your vote away is for the New Democratic Party (NDP).
In Canada, politics on the federal level are dominated by 4, and some would argue 5 parties:
- Liberal Party of Canada (centre-left)
- Conservative Party of Canada (centre-right)
- New Democratic Party (left)
- Bloc Quebecois (generally left, however this is subject to the interest of the French-speaking majority of Quebec. The Bloc only contests elections in Quebec)
- Green Party (Green politics, some left and right wing ideals, has never won more than 7% of the national vote)
Anyways my point is that most people in Canada are willing to put up with the political establishment of the parties just listed, and that the Pirate Party should maintain a resonable outlook on their prospects. Which aren't good.
how complicated, our american ways are far more superior and simple, in every election, there's only two candidates running at any given time to make it easier and simple for us americans
silly zeke and silly canadians.
I really hope that was sarcasm.
If not, I would like to enlighten you. We do have more than two opposing candidates at any given time. They just usually don't get in. Third parties, such as the Green Party or Libertarian Party, commonly win local elections, but almost never win larger elections due the comparatively massive funds at the disposal of the Democrats and Republicans.

I'd take Layton over Ignatieff, but he doesn't have a chance.
My vote went to Liberals last time since NDP didn't have a rep here.
My question for them is why the fuck do they want to remove patents? If someone works their whole life on something, they have the absolute right to capitalize on it.
My question for them is why the fuck do they want to remove patents? If someone works their whole life on something, they have the absolute right to capitalize on it.
Because people patent everything, sometimes it's just borderline ridiculous.
Software patents for example.
My question for them is why the fuck do they want to remove patents? If someone works their whole life on something, they have the absolute right to capitalize on it.
They don't want to ban patents outright. Here's what they want:
We want to ban patents on software to spur innovation and allow new start-ups to enter the market without the fear of being sued for building upon previous work. We also want to ban patents on life forms and plants since we find the notion of corporations owning the ingredients to life downright unethical.
:respek:
The NDP is a pretty damn good party. I'm surely casting my first ever vote towards them once the next federal election rolls around.
And yeah, Layton has about a snowballs chance in hell of becoming PM, which made his pamphlets curing the last election outright hilarious.
