Unlike infantrymen, bomber boys slept on clean sheets, drank beer in local pubs, and danced to the swing music of Glenn Miller's Air Force band, which toured U.S. air bases in England.
That means we'll have even more gratuitous sex scenes than in the Pacific.
I think they do it for WWII because for one, it was "the greatest" conflict in human history so far, and the least controversial over who was the "good guys" and who was the "bad guys" so to speak. Vietnam, and to a lesser degree but still a bit, Korea, has a lot of political controversy that may be difficult to steer clear from. Not necessarily from the show itself, but from the viewers saying, "No! That was wrong!" or "Yes! We should have gone further!" For example, the many war crimes and massacres that happened during Vietnam by the US. A great deal of the public don't know about them and the rest probably do their best to forget them. But they would be necessary to make a Vietnam version accurate. People aren't going to like seeing "the good guys" (ha) going off murdering and raping Vietnamese peasants.
Very true, although it's the moral dilemmas and psychological hardships in War films/shows particularly Vietnam related that make for brilliant compelling viewing, it might not appeal to the masses expecting constantly morally just characters, but creates multi layered characters with real depth. In Vietnam there were many draftees who simply did not want to be there, focusing on a character such as that alone would be interesting.
I'm sure it'll be amazing and I'm really looking forward to it but it would've been good if they'd done a series on the Korean War or Vietnam.
Am I the only one who doesn't care about any of the HBO shows? (Yes we have HBO at my house)
Well then, you're seriously missing out on some of the greatest mini-series and television series ever made. I mean, unless you're just not into television as a medium then whatever man.
The biggest issue with doing Karelian/Eastern front would be that the characters would speak english. It would detract severely. And if they put down subtitles, people would be distracted from the actual program having to read them.
Striking targets at night would be a massive pain, cities that are blacked out in addition to cloud coverage are just the tip of the iceberg for a bombardier to aim. Even if the target itself is just a city, they were still trying to pick off the industrial areas.
They British and Russians did night bombing, the Germans even created a number of night fighters to combat them. Just look up the BF110 G-4 for an example, it had a big radar lattice in the nose and occasionally had cannons that fired upward, they'd fly in below the bombers where they couldn't be seen with the radar spotter guiding the pilot on target. It became especially effective when they started using the MK108, which fired 30mm shells packed with a hell of a lot of explosives or an incendiary shell with a hydrostatic fuse that went off when it hit a liquid, like the kind inside a fuel tank. You can guess how easy it would have been to hit the fuel tanks of a B17 from above or below by this picture: [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/uS26khl.jpg[/img_thumb]
At least they are covering a new theatre this time. I'd like to see a series about the Italian front though, considering that is where the most US/British loses of the entire war were.
I think they shouldn't do anything on the allied side at all this time, I want to see the Germans at the front.

in WW1 :v:

I'm pretty mad that they went for the American's again. The Australian and British had much more interesting Ariel warefare. Although a show based on the North african theatre would be excellent.
