Nintendo reports third consecutive annual loss as Wii U sales fizzle out

I'm appalled by the amount of people that still don't know that the Wii U is a separate console from the Wii. The target market of the last Wii U was the casual players that didn't play games that much, I think they could have come up with a better name than the Wii U to help those consumers out.

you guys need to take off the nostalgia goggles. The GCN was considered a disappointment by Nintendo and less prolific than the N64. It's what inspired Nintendo to go the motion control Wii route and not the PS3 360 route.
First Nintendo console to have an HDMI port?
No but really, it's the same main appeal as any other Nintendo system. People buy it for the latest Mario, Zelda, and Super Smash Bros.
You're forgetting about the gamepad which allows for off screen play right out of the box on almost every Wii U title, it's backwards compatible with Wii games, and since it's backwards compatible most new Wii U games still use the wii remote/nunchuck along with the gamepad and pro controller so you can use whatever controller works best for you. There's a little more to it than just Mario and Zelda, but there isn't much.
the gamepad is actually pretty cool, but sadly no one really uses and even Nintendo doesn't really seem to know what to do with it. but hey, it lets me play stuff like Windwaker HD or 3D World while still being able to watch the NHL playoffs which is pretty sweet imo
While I do feel sorry for Nintendo, the Wii U as it is right now can't really justify much sales. They are doing amazing with 3DS, so the firm as a whole deserves allot of love, but if their handhelds didn't exist I'd honestly say they'd deserve this. No amount of love for Nintendo can justify a barely advertised console with too small a library.
Just being brutally honest.
The handheld market won't be enough for Nintendo in not too long. Sure, they're selling shitloads of 3DSs, but they're only selling half of what they did with the DS. The attachment rate isn't that high, either, and with smartphones getting more and more common, the purchase of a handheld console will be harder to justify.
Sure, there'll always be people that won't to play stuff like Pokemon, but the market will shrink.
The dumbest thing they could possibly do is release the 3DS Smash several months before the Wii U version.
Oh wait.

If Nintendo made a smart phone I'd drop iPhone intantly if it had a good enough battery life and a little slide out thingy with proper buttons so I can play Pokemon on the go and not have to carry my 3DS and iPhone with me.

should have been the other way around imo, make all those impatient 3ds owners cave in and get a wii u
Pretty sad, especially because I love my Wii U.

I already mentioned the GamePad and its usefulness in my previous posts, but at its most basic level, people are getting the Wii U just so they can play the new Zelda and Mario games. Nothing super exciting (barring Super Smash Bros) has been announced outside of that.
It's sad because the Wii U looks like a great console. It just doesn't have many games worth playing.

Oh, my bad then. I must have missed you previous posts.
I think Nintendo would have a better time powering new Mario games and Pokémon games etc. through to the current big consoles.. But for some reason, two consoles to choose from seems to little to me, so Nintendo need to buck their fucking game up.
Wii U was a really fucking terrible choice of name & they should have waited for the "next gen" when ps4/xbone was released and have better hardware than what they released with.
Maybe Nintendo can survive until the next gen and make a comeback..
Releasing a year before the other next gen consoles could have been a good move but they screwed it up by not doing anything significant with it that whole time.
Hang on Nintendo! I'll be getting my wii U in a few weeks!
I know they're in no imminent danger, but I do hope they start making money soon.

I thought the xbox could? They even had some little thing that you plug for a remote.
they deserve it, the hubris of thinking they "don't need to care about what other companies are doing", refusing to compete with sony or microsoft, creating a subpar console, refusing to fire iwata, etc... they're in this solely due to arrogance, if they go the sega way, maybe we'll one day get PC mario, pokemon, zelda games, like we're geting sonic pc games.

Fuck, thank you for saying this, every time I did I'd be the target of boxes and downvotes.
Nintendo at this point is banking solely on the goodwill of their overly-nostalgic fans. The Wii-U isn't offering anything particularly cool or groundbreaking. You could argue that about the PS4 and XBONE but at least their titles look somewhat exciting.

Asymmetrical multiplayer is a pretty cool idea, and it's a shame they underutilized it. I thought NSMBU was pretty mediocre, but I did love the interaction the player with the pad had with the world. It was pretty awesome invisible stopping moving platforms and traps, destroying enemy projectiles, breaking blocks, holding enemies still, and so on.
Ironically the Wii U is the only console out there that isn't a glorified PC.

Honestly, there's a few games out now on the Wii U that, in my opinion, justify picking the thing up. The problem is that they're all Nintendo games, and there's not many of them.
Aside from Wonderful 101 and the upcoming Bayonetta 2 (which aren't titles the average gamer would pick up in the first place), most third party deals on the Wii U are lackluster. Zombi U was mediocre, Lego City is okay, but the rest are last gen games and multiplatform games, there's really no substance there.
But the Nintendo made games are top-tier. Mario 3D World, DK Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, Pikmin 3, and Wind Waker HD are all excellent games, and Smash Bros is coming eventually, although it was really stupid to push it out to the 3DS first. Nintendo Land is basically a better Wii Sports (minus actual sports), and might as well have been a free title to come with the system instead of only in a few bundles. There's that Hyrule Warriors game coming out which looks kickass, and Fire Emblem mixed with SMT looks interesting.
If you've got a bias against Nintendo IPs, then you're not going to like anything on the system. A lot of people just plain skip by Nintendo IPs, and that's the whole point of owning the system. Sure, they're the same characters, but aside from the New Super Mario Bros games they all are unique and inventive in the way they play and the mechanics involved (other than typical genre controls for platformers) while also challenging at times. There's usually enough content to last longer than most triple A titles too.
Nintendo really just needs to pump out more first party titles like they did with the 3DS, and that's what they're trying to do now hopefully. There's so many good Nintendo games on the 3DS, which led to more people bought the system, and then 3rd Parties followed suit making good games for the system to get a piece of the pie, which drew in even more people to buy the system. The 3DS was a hell of a slow start, and now it's really the only handheld to get if you want a huge library. If Nintendo starts making more good games, then the slow start of the Wii U will turn around, but they really need to hustle.

CNN never really knows what they're talking about. Not surprised they said that.
If I'm honest, I think Nintendo should throw in the towel with consoles, and stick mostly to handheld gaming. There's nothing stopping them from releasing their games on all platforms.
As I said elsewhere: I don't worry about them as much as I did about a year ago; we'll see if I still think that way once Mario Kart 8 and Smash 4 hit and we see how they fare.
Yeah, it's infuriating that they're not advertising the Wii U, but the 3DS is supporting them fairly well and as long as they keep supporting the Wii U, I'd be fine with another GameCube generation. Their financial losses are a slow bleed at the moment and they've got mountains of cash in reserve, so I'm not worried about the company itself. Mostly just about the Wii U; I've been waiting for another aux-screen system since the Dreamcast died and I'm not about to lose another. Not after Windows SideShow was a stillborn.
And who knows? If the Vita of all things could make a comeback after Sony admitted they nearly discontinued it, never say never.
I feel bad because I want to support Nintendo. I love them because although their games have gotten a bit repetitive they're always solid games about gameplay and not about cutscenese/story. Not that I don't enjoy games like that as well, but it's nice to play a game that is just a game.
Also their art style in games are always amazing and I'm a sucker for cartoon character. I much prefer style over realism. I have a 3DS but I can not bring myself to buy a Wii U, it's too expensive for games that don't seem to be pushing much innovation.
Once Smash comes out I'll probably just pool in money with friends to get Smash and Mario Kart and we'll keep it at a friends house.

They COULD bring more to the table than just a console for Mario and Smash bros and stuff, but the problem is that they don't.
I honestly don't know what the big idea was when they made the WiiU as powerful as the PS3 and x360, when they probably knew very well that the next consoles would be much more powerful than those.
Its not like they need a lot of power, yes, but people always want more. What Nintendo console is capable of giving the same a 360 or a PS3 give?
The stuff only gets worse when the next gen consoles can give even more than their predecessors. Netflix and other TV channels, streaming, all that stuff. Its not just AAA video games with long lasting ties from way back, its an all round system that keeps on evolving, almost reaching the PC in usefulness, but obviously still at arms length.
People just look at the WiiU, trying to find things they like, and the only thing they come up with might be game franchises, which sadly aren't really all that diverse.

It still runs most of it's first party games in 60 fps 1080p though :v:
I mean honestly, Mario Kart 8 is one of the most gorgeous games I've ever seen.
Also, I'd love for them to diversify their portfolio but it's been proven that anything other than Mario, Zelda, Smash and Mario Kart wont sell, I mean W101 was a great game and it flopped hard, and I doubt the F-Zeros, Metroids (even though I desperately want Super Metroid 2 on 3DS or WiiU) or Star Foxes would fare much better. I doubt Bayo 2 will sell much either, but thats mindless speculation on my part.

It's been a while, but IIRC, you had to get the remote control and IR sensor to actually play the DVDs.

The thing that you plugged in was just the IR receiver for the remote.
